Smash Mouth

The American rock band Smash Mouth formed in 1994, with its original lineup including Steve Harwell, Paul De Lisle, and Greg Camp. Steve Harwell is the lead vocalist and face of the band. Steve had a distinctive, rugged appearance: a strong build, short, often bleached crew cut hair, stylish sunglasses, and a signature goatee. On stage, he always looked like a classic California biker or old-school punk rocker. Explosive, hyperactive, charismatic, and always working at full capacity. He lived life at the speed of light and adored the attention of the crowd. Colleagues recalled that Steve was the life of the party, but his uncompromising and sometimes violent nature made studio work difficult in his later years. Paul De Lisle is the bassist and backing vocalist. Paul is a classic California beach musician. For years, he wore dreadlocks or long hair, preferring simple T-shirts, shorts, and sneakers. His appearance lacks aggression—only a relaxed rocker style. Ironic, modest, and calm. Paul often jokingly refers to himself as "the unfamous member of a famous band," emphasizing that the Smash Mouth brand is more important than personal ego. He serves as the band's chief diplomat, smoothing over rough edges, and it is thanks to his patience that the band continues to exist. Greg Camp is a guitarist and songwriter. He had the classic look of a guitarist from the 90s alternative rock era: he often wore caps and shirts over T-shirts, looking like an ordinary "guy next door." A melancholic intellectual, a perfectionist, and the creative force behind the original lineup, Greg wrote their biggest hits (All Star, Walkin' on the Sun). He always preferred the quiet studio work to the noisy touring life, which is why he left the band several times, tired of endless touring. Kevin Coleman is the band's first drummer. Kevin looked like a classic guy from the alternative rock scene of the late 90s. He had a strong, medium build. He wore short dark hair, often styled with gel, and a neat goatee. His signature look in official photo shoots was narrow sports or retro sunglasses. On stage and in videos (including the legendary "All Star"), he favored loose, unrestrictive clothing—tank tops, oversized tees, or unbuttoned Hawaiian shirts. Enterprising, enterprising, and forward-thinking, Kevin possessed a strong business acumen: before taking up drums, he managed Steve Harwell, and it was he who brought the musicians together. He was a stubborn perfectionist with an excellent sense of style—it was Coleman who pushed the band to record the track "Walkin' on the Sun," which the others had initially rejected. At the same time, Kevin never suffered from star fever and was the calmest member of the band. At the height of his fame, he easily left show business for a quiet, private life and writing.
The band often embraces a retro style that spanned several decades of popularity. Astro Lounge, released in 1999, is considered the band's most commercially successful album. The members of Smash Mouth have always combined Californian laid-backness, punk rock audacity, and a touch of self-irony. Their images and personalities have evolved along with the band's history.
