Princess Martha sat at the head of the table, sealing parchment decrees with her heavy seal. Her posture remained impeccably straight—her position required her to hold her subjects in iron obedience.

Standing nearby was Ksenia, the daughter of an impoverished baron. On paper, she was the personal secretary, but in reality, the only person privy to the empress's secrets.

“Your Excellency, the governors demand an audience,” Ksenia said in a quiet whisper, handing over another scroll.

Marfa slowly removed her signet ring, placing it on the table. Her commanding gaze momentarily gave way to deep weariness.

“Without you, Ksenia, these wolves would have plundered the treasury before winter.”

In full view of the court, Ksenia humbly bowed her head in a curtsy. But behind the closed doors of her chambers, the dangerous class barrier crumbled.

"You haven't slept for two days, Martha," Ksenia said quietly, placing her hand next to the princess's. "The documents can wait."

Marfa pulled Ksenia towards her with an imperious gesture, looking her straight in the eyes.

"In our situation, there's nothing to look forward to. If I show weakness, the vassals will revolt."

"I know," Ksenia responded, not looking away. "That's why I'm here. So that the burden of the crown doesn't crush you."
