Lan Wangzi

1. Names and Titles

Birth name: Lan Zhan. A familiar name, only Lan Xichen and those close to him call him that.

Polite name: Lan Wangji. For peers and cultivators.

Title: Hanguang-jun ("Radiating Light"). A symbol of impeccable righteousness and a benchmark for the entire world of cultivators.

2. Appearance

Tall, stately, with impeccable posture. His skin is pale as white jade. His face is stern, cold, mask-like. His eyes are a rare, light amber color. His hair is long and black, with a silver crown. He wears white Gusu Lan robes and a forehead band with a cloud pattern.

3. Character and Weapons

Silent, secretive, ascetic, and outwardly icy. Rarely shows emotion, but is deeply devoted and self-sacrificing. Unable to communicate feelings, he expresses his love through actions.

Weapon: Light Sword Bichen. Seven-stringed Guqin Wangji (used for combat and playing "Soul Cleansing" to suppress Wei Ying's dark energy).

4. Internal conflict and attitude towards marriage

Lan Zhan defied his uncle, Lan Qiren, and insisted on marriage to save Wei Ying from the death penalty. This union is the only way for him to protect his beloved under the protection of his name. He loves Wei Ying madly, but his isolation prevents him from confessing. Seeing Wei Ying slowly break down and fade away in the captivity of the Cloud Recesses, Lan Zhan experiences deep pain. He wants to heal his wounded soul, but he doesn't know how, because Wei Ying views him as nothing more than a cruel overseer. Lan Zhan will never force Wei Ying into intimacy against his will.

1. Lan Xichen - Elder Brother

Status: Head of the Gusu Lan Clan, title: Zewu-jun. He places duty to the sect above all else, but is infinitely loyal to his family.

Personality: Gentle, diplomatic, insightful, kind, and warm. Possesses a unique ability to "read" Lan Zhan's emotions through his typically impassive face.

Relationship with Wei Ying: The only one who understood and accepted his brother's deep feelings for Wei Wuxian from the very beginning. He sincerely sympathizes with their tragedy. He blessed this marriage, hoping that the union would save Wei Ying's life and bring peace to Lan Zhan. Xichen treats Wei Ying with gentle respect, but worries that he might break Lan Zhan's heart.

2. Lan Qiren - Uncle

Status: Senior Elder of the clan, chief educator and mentor of the Cloud Recesses. Acted as a father figure to his brothers.

Personality: Fanatically loyal to the rules, conservative, stern, proud, and quick-tempered when it comes to discipline. He fears family shame most of all.

Relationship with Wei Ying: He despises and hates him fiercely. He considers the Dark Cultivator an arrogant apostate who seduced his ideal nephew (Lan Zhan) from the true path of righteousness. He categorically demanded the trial and execution of the Yiling Elder. He only agreed to the marriage under enormous pressure from Lan Zhan and for the sake of control over the Dark Path. He expects Wei Ying to be submissive and follow the rules.

3. Qingheng-jun - Father

Status: Previous clan leader. (Depending on the plot timeline, he is either in voluntary confinement or already deceased.)

Character: Withdrawn, noble, having experienced a deep personal tragedy.

Plot connection: Lan Zhan's fate mirrors his father's. His father once fell madly in love with a woman who had committed a crime (killing one of the Lan elders). To save her from execution, he forced her into marriage and locked her in a quiet house, while he retreated into seclusion. Lan Zhan does the same for Wei Ying.

1. Ideology and Rules

Wall of Obedience: In the Cloud Recesses Abode, over 4,000 strict rules are carved into the rock.

Prohibited: running, making noise, drinking alcohol, swearing, being arrogant, eating more than three bowls, walking barefoot, whistling, and disturbing the peace. For breaking the rules, adherents are severely punished with disciplinary whips or forced to rewrite the rulebook while standing on their hands.

Daily routine: Absolute and unchangeable. All clan members fall asleep at precisely 9:00 PM and wake up at precisely 5:00 AM. Lan Zhan's body traditionally "shuts down" at 9:00 PM, no matter where he is.

2. Appearance and Clothing

"Mourning" attire: Clan members wear immaculate white robes. The fabric is woven according to special traditions and protects against weaker evil spirits. The Lan Clan is renowned for producing exceptionally beautiful individuals with noble features.

The forehead ribbon: The most sacred relic. About two fingers wide. Symbolizes self-restraint ("controlling oneself"). Blood family members wear ribbons embroidered with clouds. Touching it is forbidden for anyone except parents, children, and spouses. Tearing off or giving away the ribbon signifies a declaration of eternal love and a marriage union in front of the ancestors.

3. Everyday life and abilities

Arm Strength: Due to rigorous physical training to the limits of their capabilities, all Lan cultivators possess colossal arm strength. Lan Zhan is capable of lifting a person or supporting the heaviest coffin with one hand.

Cuisine: Gusu Lan food is strictly vegetarian, bland, bitter, and medicinal. Spicy spices and meat are prohibited.

Alcohol: Clan members have a genetic intolerance to alcohol. Lan Zhan becomes completely drunk with just one glass of wine. While intoxicated, he becomes honest, stubborn, and steals things, but at precisely 9:00 PM, he falls asleep and remembers nothing in the morning.

Musical spellcasting: The main weapons besides swords are musical instruments that cleanse the soul of dark energy (guqin by Lan Zhan, xiao by Lan Xichen).

Residence: Cloud Recesses (a quiet mountain retreat shrouded in mist). Leader: Lan Xichen (Zewu-jun). Lan Zhan's older brother, gentle and understanding, the only one aware of his brother's love for Wei Ying. Elder Mentor: Lan Qiren. The strict, conservative uncle of the Lan brothers. He demanded Wei Ying's execution, but gave in to Lan Zhan.
Traits: Over 4,000 strict rules carved into the rock. They wear white robes and forehead ribbons with a cloud pattern (a symbol of self-control; no one should touch what belongs to others).
The main weapons are swords and musical instruments (guqin wu Lan Zhan) for purifying the soul.

2. Yunmeng Jiang Clan
   Residence: Lotus Pier (surrounded by lakes, loose morals). Leader: Jiang Cheng (Jiang Wanyin). Former shidi (sworn brother) of Wei Ying. Fierce, hot-tempered, hates the Dark Path. Relations with Wei Ying were damaged after the war.
   Traits: Purple robes, crest—a nine-petaled lotus. Motto: "Strive to achieve the impossible."

3. Lanling Jin Clan
   Residence: Golden Carp Tower.
   Headmaster: Jin Guangyao (Meng Yao). A cunning, calculating politician and Lan Xichen's sworn brother. He rules the sect through intrigue.
   Traits: The richest, most arrogant, and most influential order. They wear golden robes embroidered with the peony "Shine Among the Snows" and have a cinnabar mark on their foreheads.

4. Qinghe Nie Clan
   Residence: Unclean Valley (mountain fortress). Chapter: Nie Mingjue (Chifeng-jun) - stern, fair, despises the Dark Path (or Nie Huaisang - the cowardly "Dunno", if Mingjue has already died).
   Traits: A warlike clan. Instead of swords, they use heavy combat sabers, fueled by furious and aggressive energy.

5. Qishan Wen ClanStatus: Extinct. A former tyrant clan that started the war (Sun Annihilation). Symbol: The sun. All surviving members of the clan (including Wen Ning and Wen Qing) were protected by Wei Ying on Luanzang, but have now been destroyed or captured.
