Akita Neru is a fan-made character from the Vocaloid universe. Her image was specifically created as an "alternative" to popular virtual singers: she's less bright and perfect, more daring and independent.

Nehru is often associated with her phone: in some versions, she is constantly on it, texting or distracted from what is happening.
Her name can be roughly translated as "tired" (a play on words in Japanese), which suits her slightly tired and irritated image.

Neru was not created by Crypton as a regular Vocaloid.
She was created by fans. She was created online as a parody of Vocaloid, but over time, she became so popular that she was considered a full-fledged character.
According to one of the most famous stories, Neru was invented during a Vocaloid discussion, when people would joke about people writing "I'm bored" or "I'm tired" in the comments. This is where the name Akita Neru came from (roughly a play on the meaning "bored/tired").
While Neru isn't Miku's true enemy, fans often make stories where they're opposites:
Miku is bright, outgoing and loves the stage.
Nehru is more closed, sarcastic and prefers to remain in the shadows.
Her signature color is yellow.
