His mother, Cynthia, was very ill with cancer. Because the family followed the Christian Science religion, she refused conventional medical treatment. Her illness and death (between the end of 1979 and the beginning of 1980, according to different biographical accounts) deeply affected James and influenced several lyrics he would write years later. Furthermore, his father had abandoned them years earlier. James was a very shy teenager who sought refuge in music.
