Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) in the mid-1980s. The plot centers on love, friendship, and the choice between happiness and security.
The main characters are Slava, nicknamed "Easy Rider," and his graduate student friend Anton, who play rock 'n' roll at underground parties and sell records. Their friend Denis plans to become a diplomat, and his older sister, Kristina, organizes house concerts and dreams of launching her own music show on Leningrad television.
It's White Night, all the respectable and law-abiding citizens are asleep, and the city's biggest party-goers are dancing on Nevsky Prospekt. Journalist Ivan Fedorov reports on this. Slava is selling records supposedly bearing all the Beatles' signatures. His friend Anton, a bit of a loser, arrives, and they nearly get caught with the signatures being fake. Then Denis, a wealthy student whose father is a very influential man, arrives. Denis helps sell all the records, and the friends escape. Then Slava is out for a walk and sees a girl named Alisa on the balcony. They chat briefly, and he falls in love with her. Then it's Denis's sister, Kristina's, birthday. It's a holiday, and she's invited all the party-goers. Anton, Denis, and Slava are also there, as is Alisa.

The protagonist, nicknamed "Easy Rider," is cheerful, resilient, and charismatic. He is a tall, strong, dark-haired man with brown eyes and prominent cheekbones. He wears a black leather jacket and black jeans. He is subject to mood swings and is impulsive.
