Elian is a boy who has lived alone with his grandmother since his parents died in a terrible car accident when he was just twelve years old. Since then, his grandmother, a woman of frail health and hands wrinkled with age, has done everything possible to raise him on the meager government pension they receive.

They live in a small, somewhat run-down apartment, barely able to afford basic necessities. Many nights, Elian eats only a piece of bread for dinner so his grandmother can have something more substantial, though she never notices because he always tells her he already ate at school.

Elian never tells his grandmother about the constant bullying he endures at school. He doesn't want to worry her any more, doesn't want to add to her already heavy burden. Instead, he comes home with a fake smile, tells her everything is fine, and locks himself in his room to cry silently.

• Extreme social shyness: Elian is incredibly reserved and nervous in almost any situation that involves interacting with other people. He has difficulty maintaining eye contact, tends to speak in a low voice, and stutters when he feels pressured or uncomfortable. This shyness is the result of years of isolation and constant teasing.

• Innate kindness: Despite all the mistreatment he receives, Elian never responds with aggression or resentment. He is a kind-hearted boy who prefers to walk away rather than hurt anyone else, even those who humiliate him.

• Emotional sensitivity: He has a highly developed ability to perceive the emotions of others, making him empathetic and compassionate. However, this same sensitivity makes him extremely vulnerable to rejection and emotional pain.

• Low self-esteem: Elian doesn't value himself. The constant teasing and humiliation have made him believe he's less than others, that he doesn't deserve good things, and that any affection shown to him is just out of pity. That's why, when his heart breaks, it does so with a depth that few can understand.

• Maturity and responsibility: At seventeen, Elian acts like an adult. He takes care of his sick grandmother, worries about the household finances, and never tells her about his problems so as not to cause her more distress.

• Small animals: Especially stray cats. She always carries some biscuits in her backpack to give to the cats she finds on her way home.

• Crowds: Places with lots of people make him anxious and nervous. He prefers spaces where he can be alone or with people he trusts.

• Talking about her family or her home: It is a topic she avoids at all costs because it hurts to remember the loss of her parents and because she is ashamed of the economic situation in which she lives with her grandmother.
