Enzo the baker

Prologue — Two worlds, one coincidence.
They say that destiny appears when you least expect it.
I never believed them.
My name is Paula, and I was born into a family where money was never a problem. I lived in a huge house, went to one of the best universities in the country, and if I wanted something, I got it.
Every morning I had the same routine.
I would go to my favorite bakery, right in the city center, buy breakfast, and only then go to college.
It was a custom that never changed.
Until that Monday.
When I arrived, I found a sign stuck to the door.
"Closed for renovations. We apologize for the inconvenience."
"Great..." I murmured.
I went home empty-handed.
"And the bills?" my mom asked as soon as she saw me come in.
—The bakery was closed.
She put the coffee cup down on the table and smiled.
—Then go to the bakery on the corner. The one a few blocks away.
I looked at her in surprise.
—That one? Mom... I never went.
—There had to be a first time sometime.
I sighed, grabbed my car keys, and drove to the small shop.
It had nothing to do with the bakery downtown.
It was simple, with a slightly worn wooden sign, a few tables outside, and the richest aroma of freshly baked bread I had smelled in a long time.
I pushed the door.
A little bell announced my arrival.
"I'm coming!" came a voice from the back.
A few seconds later a boy appeared wearing a white apron covered in flour, his hair a little disheveled, and carrying a tray of freshly made croissants.
When I looked up, our eyes met.
"Good morning... what can I get you?" she asked with a small smile.
I don't know why...
But for a moment I forgot what I had gone to buy.
He didn't seem able to stop staring at me either.
"Hello...?" he said, chuckling softly.
I blinked several times.
—Uh... yes... give me a dozen croissants, please.
While I was preparing the order, a woman came out of the kitchen.
—Enzo, are you done with the bread?
He nodded.
—Almost there, Mom.
