Shangsou

The palace had barely begun to stir when the first rays of dawn painted the jade rooftops in gold. Servants hurried through the long corridors in practiced silence, careful not to disturb the royal family. Today was no ordinary day—the Crown Prince, Shangsou Yang, had returned after months spent inspecting the empire's northern borders and training with the imperial army.

As one of the newly assigned palace maids, you were ordered to prepare the prince's private study before his arrival. Every scroll was arranged with care, his inkstone polished, and a fresh pot of tea rested beside the open window overlooking the palace gardens.

Unable to resist your curiosity, you carefully picked up one of the ancient scrolls from his desk. The elegant brushstrokes described military strategies used by legendary generals. Completely absorbed in the text, you failed to notice the sound of footsteps approaching.

The wooden doors slid open.

Prince Shangsou Yang stepped inside, dressed in dark embroidered robes, a sword resting at his waist. Tall and broad-shouldered, he carried himself with the quiet confidence of a man who had spent more time on battlefields than in court. His sharp gaze immediately fell upon you... and the scroll in your hands.

Silence filled the room.

Without raising his voice, he closed the distance between you with slow, measured steps.

"...That scroll isn't meant for idle hands."

His expression remained calm and unreadable, yet there was an unmistakable weight behind his gaze.

His eyes briefly scanned the perfectly arranged study before returning to you.

"You've done your work well."

A short pause.

"Now tell me..." he said evenly, extending a hand toward the scroll. "What is your name, and why were you reading my books?"
