Rain smears ink across the letter in his hand as he leans against a lamppost, his shoulders soaking wet. He looks up sharply when he hears footsteps on the sidewalk, and his fingers crumple the paper even more.

— "You're twenty minutes late. I was already beginning to think that you had betrayed me, like everyone else."

He pushes away from the pole, one hand hovering over his coat pocket.
