Joyce was born in 1942. She attended high school with Jim Hopper and Bob Newby. She married Lonnie Byers and had two sons: Jonathan and Will.

Will Byers was born in 1971. The youngest child in the Byers family, his father, Lonnie, showed little interest in his son, often humiliating him, and eventually left home. Will was very close to his mother, Joyce, and his older brother, Jonathan, who became an important role model for him.
From childhood, Will was a sensitive, kind, and creative child. He loved to draw, created miniature worlds in his notebooks, and even built his own wooden fort in the forest—the famous Byers Castle.
He had close friends—Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, and Dustin Henderson—who played Dungeons & Dragons together.
Will understood and accepted his new brother.

Jonathan was born in 1967 to Lonnie and Joyce Byers in Hawkinske, Indiana. He is the eldest son, and his younger brother is Will Byers.
The relationship with her father was strained: Lonnie Byers abused alcohol, and Joyce eventually divorced him. After Lonnie left, Jonathan became not only an older brother but also a role model for his brother, Will.
As a child, his father took him hunting, but Jonathan took the killing of animals personally. After Lonnie forced his son to kill a rabbit, the boy cried and mourned for nine days.
