Teru Mikami

Teru Mikami (魅上 照, Mikami Teru) is a 27-year-old criminal prosecutor chosen as the Hand of Kira by Light Yagami. Mikami takes ownership of Gelus's Death Note after Light falls under suspicion of being Kira again, and needs someone to act as Kira without being given every order.

He also performs the Shinigami Eye Deal with Ryuk, granting him Shinigami Eyes. When Mikami's decisions reveal that he can follow the thoughts and ideals of the first Kira, Light wonders if Mikami will become much-needed help or a liability.

Mikami is characterized as having a strong sense of justice that has developed over the course of his childhood. He detests crime and, similar to Light, expresses a fervent passion for punishing evil. His sense of justice, however, has developed into a rather "black and white" understanding of people, and he goes as far as to label everyone he meets as either good or evil. Mikami is also notable for his devotion as a Kira-worshipper; his answer to a Kira’s Kingdom survey question that asked what he thought of Kira was simply "God." His loyalty to Kira is exemplified when he forces himself to stop questioning Kira after he is perplexed by the task of creating and using a fake notebook.

What Mikami has learned in childhood has caused him to become obstinate about encouraging people to improve society, resulting in his disdain for "lazy people." This is reflected in one of Kiyomi Takada's televised messages, in which Mikami has her announce that those who do not contribute to society will be killed by Kira. Mikami's past life experiences have also developed into a special interest in children and a desire to prepare them to become model citizens that will contribute to society. The anime delves deeper into this interest, providing a scene of Mikami as an adult intervening when a group of young students bully one of their classmates.

Much like Light, Mikami is fiercely dedicated to his goals and will resort to utilitarian means to achieve them. As such, he is not above taking innocent lives so long as it serves a greater purpose. For instance, in the manga, he kills a reporter who tried to investigate one of Light and Takada's meetings, even though the reporter was only accused of "breaking and entering" and legally considered innocent. Unlike Light, though, he does not hesitate to sacrifice half of his remaining lifespan to receive the Shinigami Eyes.

Furthermore, though Light and Mikami have similarities in their ideals, there have been examples of gaps and differences. For instance, Mikami believes in killing people who have had criminal records in the past, even if they still do not commit crimes. Light disagrees with this because of how contradictory it is to Kira's purpose of deterring people to commit future crimes. While Light is more interested in scaring criminals in order to prevent crime, Mikami is more interested in retribution.

Mikami is also notable for adhering to a strict, daily schedule, a trait noticed by both Light and Near. For instance, he exercises at a gym at the same time on the same days each week, regardless of holidays, and he has been a member of this gym for years. Whenever he judges criminals in his Death Note, names are written down in straight columns on every page. He also fills up exactly one page with names each day - a feat which Light notes as "obsessive." Near and the SPK are able to take advantage of Mikami's clockwork life and find occasions to tamper with his notebook. Another example of his adherence to habit is Mikami continuing to wear his glasses even after gaining improved vision from the Shinigami Eyes.

Mikami appears to struggle with a form of mental instability, though it is unclear if he was born that way, if it was a product of his traumatic environment, or both. For instance, Mikami repeatedly recites "delete" whenever he writes a name in his notebook.

As a child, Mikami's sense of justice developed through the over-observation of, according to the manga, "his surroundings." Even at a young age, he had already begun categorizing people as either "good" or "evil." Raised by a single mother, she is described by Mikami as his only ally and sole confidant during his youth.

His analytic behavior was indicative of his intellect which, coupled with his ambition and sense of justice, allowed him to become the president of his class in elementary school. As class president, he defended his classmates from bullies, often leading to physical altercations.

Although Mikami was eventually successful in uniting his entire class against the bullies, he found his efforts making little headway once he began attending middle school. Constantly being bullied and beaten himself, Mikami's sense of justice became warped as he began to wish for the "deletion" of his "enemies."

Worried about his safety, his mother attempted to convince him to give up trying to help his classmates. In response, Mikami lost faith in his mother and began to hold her in contempt. His mother would eventually be killed in a car accident along with four of Mikami's "enemies." Although Mikami initially mourned his mother’s death, he was content in the knowledge that his classroom became more "peaceful" as a result of the accident. From then on, Mikami subscribed to the belief that anyone who did wrong should be punished, and he took it upon himself to enforce this belief as his hatred for evil grew "stronger and stronger."

These feelings eventually seeped into his career aspirations, and after graduating from high school with excellent grades and attending Kyodo University's Department of Law, he becomes a prosecuting attorney. Shortly after adopting his profession, Mikami learns about Kira through various media outlets. Feeling that his sense of righteousness was confirmed through Kira’s actions, Mikami begins to worship Kira. Mikami eventually becomes a member of Kira's Kingdom in hopes of being noticed by Kira through televised appearances.

After Near instills doubt in the Japanese Task Force, Light decides to elect a new proxy in order to stave off suspicion. Watching various tapings of Kira’s Kingdom, Light selects Mikami based on his intuition alone.

Mikami, feeling honored by receiving Kira's power, realizes that Kira is unable to move at the moment. Mikami takes action immediately and kills Demegawa and his men when they stray from Kira's word, after taking the Shinigami Eye Deal.

In order to let Kira know that he needs to get in touch, Mikami goes on Sakura TV, claiming that Kira worshipers should await Kira's orders, and, should they not receive word from Kira, they should act upon themselves. This was used a subtle way of letting Kira know that Mikami needs to get consent from Kira to do his killings, and, should Kira not be able to do so, Mikami will elect a new spokesperson and kill based on his own wishes. After a few days, Mikami, feeling that Kiyomi Takada is intelligent and agrees with Kira, elects her as Kira's new spokesperson.

When Takada begins questioning Kira on television and shares her own personal opinion on the matter, Mikami infers that Kira must have met up with Takada and told her to act the way she did on television. During one of Light and Takada's private meetings, Mikami calls Takada via cell phone, and after asking her some questions, tells her to hand the phone over to the person she's having a meeting with, thinking it is Kira. Light confirms that he is Kira by revealing subtle details about the Death Note. From then on, Light communicates with Mikami through Takada by passing notes to her that instruct her to send specific messages to Mikami.

Light tells Mikami to forge a fake notebook while sending Takada clippings of some of the notebook's real pages in an effort to trick Near and the SPK, with Light expecting Near to swap the notebook with a fake. Using this strategy, Near, thinking the notebook Mikami is using is real, would swap the forged notebook with another fake, while Mikami brings out the real notebook during the anticipated final confrontation between Near and Light. In public, Mikami writes down names in this fake notebook while secretly sending Takada the name and face of the victim so that Gevanni, who is tailing Mikami, would be able to confirm Mikami is X-Kira and is using the real notebook.

Light also has Mikami say that his Shinigami is not following him anymore. This way, if and when Near would come into contact with the forged notebook, when he sees no Shinigami, he would not take that as evidence the notebook is a fake. Eventually, Near does indeed swap the forged notebook with another fake and Mikami, who checks the notebook with a microscope every day, confirms the swap with Light and Takada, ensuring their victory over Near.

Unexpectedly, Mello kidnaps Takada, who successfully kills Mello. Under Light's orders, Takada asks Mikami for the names of criminals so that she would be able to kill as many as she can. However, should Takada be seen by the SPK and the Task Force, the snippet of the notebook she keeps with her would be detrimental for Kira, so Mikami, not knowing Light has already killed Takada with his piece of the notebook, writes down Takada's name using the real notebook. Unbeknownst to Mikami, Near uses this opportunity to swap the real notebook with a fake one as well.

Facts:
His address is Kyoto-fu, Kyoto-shi, Skyo-ku Yoshidashinmachi 1-444-1-1012, according to what he wrote on his Kira's Kingdom survey.
The only times Mikami didn't wear his glasses before gaining the Shinigami Eyes were when he was being interviewed on television about Kira. This could mean that Mikami either had contacts, or he mostly needed his glasses for just reading.
Mikami's watch appears to be based on a Zenith 1965 vintage.

A Death Note is a weapon capable of killing people from a distance. The user's location is irrelevant, but they must know the victim's name and face. A Death Note is an item originally belonging to the Death Gods. Using Death Notes, the Death Gods fulfill their primary purpose—killing people. The origin of these artifacts is unknown, but Death Gods are given Death Notes by the Death King. Each Death God can only be given one Death Note by the King, but a Death God can possess as many as they can get their hands on.

The notebook is an ordinary, unremarkable notebook with white, broadly lined pages. It has a black cover with the words "Death Note" written in white on the front.

Terms of Use:

1. The person whose name is written in the Death Note will die.
2. The Death Note will only work if the writer knows the person's face. Therefore, people with the same name will not die at the same time.
3. If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the name, the person will die that way.
4. If the cause of death is not written, the person will die of a heart attack after 40 seconds.
5. After writing the cause of death, there is an additional 6 minutes and 40 seconds to write down the circumstances of death.
6. The circumstances of death must be physically possible. If they are impossible, only the possible part will work, or the person will die of a heart attack.
7. A name cannot be "undone." Once a name is written, death is already inevitable, even if the entry is later erased.
8. A torn page or even a small fragment of the Death Note has the same properties as the entire Death Note.
9. A person who voluntarily relinquishes ownership of the Death Note loses all memories associated with it. Touching the Death Note again returns the memory.
10. A person who has used the Death Note will not enter either Heaven or Hell.

Ryuk is a Shinigami who threw the Death Note into the human world for fun after becoming bored.

Appearance: He is very thin, with light gray, almost blue skin, spiky black hair, thin gray-blue lips, and sharp teeth. His limbs are abnormally long. He has large, round yellow eyes with bright red irises and wings on his back that he can retract. Ryuk is considered quite handsome in the world of the Death Gods. He wears tight-fitting black leather clothing, the collar and sleeves of which are trimmed with the fur of an unknown beast from the Underworld. He has a weakness for various skulls, crosses, and iron chains. A special cross-shaped decoration for the Death Note can be seen on his belt. This is why Ryuk always carries the note with him. He loves chunky rings. A silver earring with a heart at the end can be seen in his left ear. Ryuk also has black wings, which he uses for flight.

Personality/Backstory:
Ryuk dislikes boredom; he seeks entertainment. The Shinigami world has long since become a desert, inhabited only by those Death Gods who don't want to die and don't know why they live. They spend their days playing cards or simply lazing around. Ryuk grew tired of this pastime and decided to have some fun: he tricked Big Boss, took the second Death Note, and dropped it into the human world. This notebook was found by Light. Shinigami enjoyed watching Light Yagami's activities; he never interfered with him or helped him write names in the Notebook. Although he sometimes provoked him for fun. The path of entertainment is this god's principle; he doesn't care what happens in the human world, as long as it's interesting, fun, and funny. Often, he informs Light about certain aspects of the Death Note at the very last minute; it's interesting to see how he handles it. Although sometimes, he helped Yagami for his own interests, since apples are his weakness. Ryuk, like a human, succumbed to his weaknesses—apples.

Rem is the god of death. It was from her that Misa Amane received her Death Note. Like Ryuk, Rem possesses two Death Notes, but unlike him, she obtained hers by chance.

Appearance:
Rem has a very thin build, with a very long spine visible. She has distinctive features, such as her hair and the blue markings on her face. The only exception is in the anime, where her markings are purple. She has a raspy, slightly masculine voice. Height from 2.5 to 3 meters.

Personality:
While Ryuk amuses himself in the human world, Rem does the exact opposite. She views most people with disdain. Furthermore, while Ryuk remains indifferent to Light Yagami's success or failure, Rem actively assists Misa. She is even willing to sacrifice her life to protect her, as evidenced by her threat to Light. For Misa's sake, she aided Light in his plans.

Backstory:
The god of death, Jealous, who fell in love with Misa Amane, intentionally extended her life by writing the name of the person who would kill her in his Death Note. However, death gods are forbidden from artificially extending human lifespans. Having violated this law, Jelos immediately turned into a pile of ash. Touched by his sacrifice, Rem decided to give Jelos's Death Note to Misa. Rem is almost the complete opposite of Ryuk, who enjoys everything in the human world. She is contemptuous of humanity, believing her race to be superior. Ultimately, Rem becomes attached to Misa and tries to protect her from Light, whom she sincerely despises.

She died saving Misa.

Shinigami are gods of death who inhabit the Shinigami Realm, a desolate, lifeless place where they spend eternity. Their primary duty is to prolong their own lives by writing people's names in Death Notes. When a person dies from writing in the Note, their remaining lifespan is transferred to the Shinigami.
Shinigami Realm The Shinigami Realm is a gray, barren wasteland with ruined buildings. Most Shinigami spend their time idle, gambling, or observing the human world. Despite the existence of the Shinigami King, there is little strict oversight over them.

Basic Rules:

1. Each Shinigami possesses their own Death Note.
2. A Shinigami may intentionally drop their Death Note in the human world.
3. While a human possesses a Death Note, its original Shinigami owner usually follows them.
4. Shinigami are not supposed to selflessly save people. If a Shinigami intentionally extends a person's life at the cost of their own Death Note, they die, turning to dust.
5. Shinigami see a person's true name and their remaining lifespan.
6. Dealing with the Eyes of a Shinigami: The owner of the Death Note can make a deal with the Shinigami accompanying them. In exchange for half of their remaining lifespan, the person receives the Eyes of the Shinigami—the ability to see the true name and remaining lifespan of any person by looking at their face.

The story begins with Light Yagami, a highly intelligent, cold, and principled high school student who abhors injustice and believes the world is rotten. One day, he finds a Death Note in the schoolyard—a notebook that allows him to kill anyone if he knows their name and face and writes it down.
The owner of the note is Ryuk, a shinigami who deliberately threw it into the human world out of boredom. Light doesn't believe it at first, but then tests the note's rules on a criminal on the news and realizes it's real.
After this, Light has an idea: he decides to cleanse the world of criminals and create a new world where he will be like a god. He begins killing criminals on television news, usually with heart attacks. People online begin to notice a pattern and name him Kira.
The police realize this isn't an ordinary series of deaths, but the work of a single person. The investigation is led by the enigmatic detective L—a brilliant, secretive, and highly unusual man who works through an intermediary, Watari.
L sets a trap: a fake criminal, Lind L. Taylor, is broadcast on television. Light, thinking he's the real deal and being investigated, kills him. L then learns that Kira is in Japan, roughly in the Kanto region, and that he is capable of killing based on an image and name.
The real hunt then begins.

The investigation involves:
Soichiro Yagami, Light's father and head of the police force;
Aizawa, Mogi, and Matsuda, police officers from the team;
later, others join them;
Light also joins the investigation to appear innocent and get closer to L.
L begins to suspect Light. To test him, the police place surveillance, wiretaps, and cameras on Light. Light notices all this and begins to act very cautiously.
Now Naomi Misora, a former FBI agent and Ray Penber's fiancée, enters the picture. Ray was sent to Japan with other agents to spy on the police, but Light outsmarted him: he forced Ray to show his ID, then used the Death Note to kill him, and then, through Ray, eliminated the other FBI agents. This narrows L's circle of suspects even further. Naomi begins her own investigation, realizing that Ray's death was no accident. Light meets her, poses as an ordinary, intelligent schoolboy, coaxes information out of her, and then kills her. This is a crucial moment: Light demonstrates early on that he is capable of more than just killing, but manipulating people at the highest level.
Then Misa Amane appears—a famous model who adores Kira. Her own story is tragic: her parents were murdered, and afterward, the Shinigami Gelus saved her life by killing the man who was supposed to kill her. Because of this, Gelus died, and his Death Note ended up in the hands of Rem, another Shinigami who was looking after Misa.
Rem gives Misa the Death Note and helps her. Misa, wanting to be of use to Kira, makes a deal with the Shinigami and receives Shinigami Eyes, the ability to see a person's true name and lifespan by looking at them.
Misa begins killing criminals on her own and searches for the real Kira. She finds Light and falls in love with him almost immediately, perceiving him as the god of a new world. Light, in turn, uses her as a tool, though outwardly he acts affectionately.

L realizes that Kira is connected to Light and Misa. He sets a trap with the new public Kira, using television, evidence, and psychological pressure. Misa is also a suspect because she acts too in sync with Kira.
L arrests Light and Misa and holds them in custody. Both understand that if they are held for too long without the ability to kill, their connection to the Death Notes may weaken. But in reality, Light had already devised a plan: he hid a fragment of the Death Note so that he could continue killing through it, and then, when the time comes, he consciously gives up possession of the Death Note, loses his memory of everything connected to Kira, and does the same through Misa.
After this, Light and Misa temporarily become normal people and begin their own investigation against Kira—no longer remembering that they are Kira and the second Kira. While Light and Misa are unaware of anything, a new Kira appears—actually, Kyosuke Higuchi, an executive at Yotsuba Corporation. He obtains the Death Note and begins using it to his advantage, killing competitors to advance the company and profit.
L, the police, Light, and Misa team up to identify the new Kira. This is an interesting period because:
Light temporarily acts as L's ally;
Misa also helps;
they capture Higuchi as the real user of the Death Note.
During this arc, Light deliberately retrieves the Death Note, and when he touches it, his memories of it return. He instantly becomes Kira again.
Higuchi is captured, and Light regains possession of the Death Note.

Rem realizes that L is about to expose Misa and possibly Light, meaning Misa could die. A shinigami shouldn't save a person at the cost of her own gain, but Rem has become attached to Misa and is ready to protect her. Light understands this perfectly and devises a plan: he pushes the situation so that Rem is forced to kill L and Watari, otherwise Misa will die.
Rem writes L and Watari's names in the Death Note and then dies herself, because a shinigami dies if she prolongs the life of a person who shouldn't have been saved.
Thus dies L, Light's main adversary.
After this, Light wins the main round.
After L's death, Light quickly takes his place in the investigation and effectively becomes the new symbol of justice within the team. Five years pass. He remains close to the police, but now has much greater control over the situation. The police are beginning to perceive him as L's successor. On the outside, he looks like the perfect heir, but on the inside, he has almost completely taken over the investigation.

After L's death, it is revealed that he was raised in Wammy's House, an orphanage for genius children, where he had two potential successors:
Near - cold, calculating, and quiet;
Mello - impulsive, aggressive, and willing to use dirty tricks.
They both consider themselves worthy of continuing L's legacy, but they take different paths. It all starts happening in 2012.
Near: Creates the SPK organization and begins gathering evidence against Kira.
Mello: Enters the criminal underworld, contacts the mafia, and operates through violence, blackmail, and kidnapping.
Both are dangerous in their own ways. Light initially underestimates them because he believes that after L's death, no one can threaten him.
After L's death, Light enters a period of almost complete control. He:
maintains the image of a worthy successor;
continues to manipulate events;
strengthens the cult of Kira;
uses Misa when necessary;
operates through assistants and proxies.
At the same time, Soichiro Yagami, Light's father, is suffering from what's happening. He's an honest police officer and doesn't know the truth about his son. For him, Kira's investigation is becoming a personal tragedy.

Mello begins to act harshly. He kidnaps Sayu Yagami, Light's sister, to obtain the Death Note and force the police to make an exchange.
This leads to major problems for the Yagami family. Soichiro participates in the rescue operation and is seriously injured during the process. This will later lead to his death.
This stage is also important because Mello, unwittingly, helps uncover new aspects of the conflict between Kira, the police, and L's heirs.
At one point, Soichiro decides to take a desperate step and makes a deal for the eyes of the Shinigami, in order to see the true identities of his enemies and contribute something useful to the investigation.
He encounters Mello, sees his face and name, but the tragedy is that he doesn't have time to fully utilize this. Soichiro later dies. This is one of the most difficult moments in the story, because he remains honest and dedicated to the cause to the end. Light is outwardly grieving his father's death, but his inner priority remains the same: preserving Kira's image and completing his plan.
Then, Kiyomi Takada, a popular TV presenter and former university acquaintance of Light's, enters the picture. She becomes Kira's public face and helps spread his ideology.
Light uses Takada as a tool for influencing society and as a conduit for connecting with the right people. She truly believes in Kira, and Light skillfully exploits this.

Now Teru Mikami appears.
He is a crucial character:
he is a fanatical supporter of Kira;
he has a strict sense of justice;
he hates criminals;
he is willing to kill without hesitation to "purify the world."
Mikami begins to act as Kira's executor. Light notices that he is almost the perfect person for such a role: disciplined, religiously devoted to the idea, not prone to doubt.
Through Takada, Light establishes contact with him and makes him his main assistant in the real world. Thus, Mikami becomes Kira's right-hand man. He receives instructions from Light and begins writing the names of criminals in the Death Note almost like a robot.
Mikami develops a strict regime:
he writes the names at a specific time;
he keeps the Death Note extremely carefully;
he treats it almost like a sacred object;
he tries not to make a single mistake.
This makes him useful, but also too predictable.
Nia gradually realizes that Light is Kira. He gathers evidence, monitors Light's surroundings, and carefully studies Mikami's behavior.
SPK and Near are on the trail:
they notice a connection between Takada, Mikami, and Kirami;
observe Mikami's routine;
understand where and when he uses the Death Note;
begin to suspect he has a real connection with Kira.
Nia acts more quietly and slowly than Mello, but is far more precise.
Nia discovers that Mikami keeps the Death Note in a bank vault and has a very strict usage schedule. By observing him, Near understands when and how he retrieves the note.
And then he seizes the opportunity: Near switches the Death Note with a fake. This is one of the key moves in the final part of the story.
Nia now has control of the situation, while Kira no longer has an absolute guarantee that his plan will work as intended.
All this is still happening in 2012.
