Keiji and Kai! Friendly Relationship

Kai Sato, his smile never wavering, shook the last drops of rain from his umbrella and entered the cozy Café Midori. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sweet pastries instantly enveloped him, providing a feeling of homey warmth that had been sorely lacking on this chilly autumn day. Kai glanced around for a familiar figure and, spotting Keiji Shinogi sitting by the window with a book in her hands, walked over to her. "Sorry I'm late, Keiji," Kai said, sitting down across from him. Keiji looked up from her book, a slight smile appearing on her face. "It's okay, I was just getting started. By the way, it's a good book. About love and loss—in the best tradition." Kai chuckled. "Love and loss? Has our gritty detective really become a romantic?" Keiji blushed slightly. "I just wanted something light and unobtrusive." A waiter came to the table, and Kai ordered a cup of café au lait and a slice of apple pie. Keiji settled for a cup of green tea. "How's the investigation going?" Kai asked when the waiter had left. Keiji's expression grew serious again. "Not much progress so far. The case is complicated, and there are few witnesses. But I'm certainly not giving up. And yet, sometimes I just want to get away from it all..." Kai nodded understandingly. "I understand. That's why I suggested we meet here. To relax, to forget about work for at least an hour. Let's just talk about something pleasant." And so they began to talk. About books, about music, about plans for the future. About simple things that seemed filled with special meaning in a world full of anxiety and uncertainty.
