N’s journey is one of self-discovery.
He begins convinced that separating humans and Pokémon is the only moral choice. As he travels and meets Trainers who genuinely love and respect their partners, he realizes the world is far more complex than he was taught.
Rather than rejecting his compassion, he expands it. He comes to believe that the ideal future is not one where humans and Pokémon live apart, but one where they understand and respect one another.
This willingness to question himself and grow is what makes N one of the most nuanced characters in the Pokémon franchise.
Likes/Dislikes
Likes
Throughout the games, N consistently shows affection for:
He also enjoys observing the unique bonds that different Trainers share with their Pokémon, especially after his worldview begins to change.
⸻
Dislikes
Although no official list exists, N clearly dislikes:
One of the things that troubles N most is seeing trust betrayed, whether between people or between Trainers and their Pokémon.
Relationships
Ghetsis
Ghetsis is N’s adoptive father and the person who raised him.
For much of his life, N trusts Ghetsis completely, believing he genuinely wants to create a better world for Pokémon.
Eventually, N discovers that Ghetsis manipulated him from childhood, using his compassion as a means to gain power. This betrayal becomes one of the defining moments of N’s life.
⸻
The Player Character (Hilbert/Hilda or Nate/Rosa)
The protagonist challenges N’s beliefs more than anyone else.
Through their bond with Pokémon, they prove that humans and Pokémon can live together through mutual trust rather than exploitation.
Although they begin as ideological opponents, N ultimately comes to respect—and even admire—the protagonist.
⸻
Reshiram / Zekrom
Depending on the version of the game, N is chosen by either Reshiram or Zekrom, one of Unova’s two Legendary Dragons.
This symbolizes that N sincerely pursues either Truth or Ideals, even if his understanding is incomplete.
⸻
Team Plasma
N initially serves as Team Plasma’s king and public leader.
Many members genuinely admire him because of his kindness and ability to communicate with Pokémon.
After learning the truth about Ghetsis, N distances himself from the organization.
.
Pokémon are the center of N’s life.
He treats them as equals rather than tools or pets.
He:
Many Pokémon seem unusually comfortable around him.
background
Very little is known about N’s early childhood.
He was adopted and raised by Ghetsis, one of the Seven Sages and the true leader of Team Plasma.
To shape N into the perfect “King,” Ghetsis isolated him from ordinary society. Instead of growing up with other children, N spent most of his life among Pokémon that had been abandoned, injured, or abused by humans.
Hearing only their painful experiences led N to believe that humans and Pokémon should be separated for the sake of Pokémon’s happiness.
Unbeknownst to him, Ghetsis manipulated this worldview to further his own ambitions. While Team Plasma publicly preached Pokémon liberation, Ghetsis secretly intended to monopolize Pokémon for himself once everyone else had released theirs.
N eventually discovers this deception and rejects Ghetsis’s ideals, choosing to forge his own path.
.
Ability to Understand Pokémon
N possesses an extraordinary gift that appears unique in the Pokémon world.
He can seemingly communicate directly with Pokémon, understanding their emotions, thoughts, and desires without needing translations or technology.
Although the games never fully explain whether this is supernatural or simply exceptional empathy, Pokémon consistently respond to him as if they truly understand one another.
This ability is one of the main reasons Ghetsis chooses N as the figurehead of Team Plasma.
⸻
Battle Style
Unlike most Trainers, N rarely keeps Pokémon permanently.
He believes every Pokémon should be free to choose its own path.
As a result:
This reflects his philosophy that Pokémon are companions rather than possessions.
⸻
Strength as a Trainer
Despite his unusual methods, N is an exceptionally skilled Trainer.
His strengths include:
He forms bonds with Pokémon remarkably quickly.
Personality
N is one of the most emotionally complex characters in Pokémon.
He is gentle, thoughtful, curious, and deeply empathetic. From childhood, he was raised almost entirely alongside abused and abandoned Pokémon, with very little healthy interaction with other humans. Because of this, he developed a unique worldview: he understands Pokémon exceptionally well but struggles to interpret human motives and social behavior.
When he first meets people, he often comes across as mysterious or detached—not because he lacks emotions, but because he expresses them differently.
N genuinely believes that Pokémon should live free from human ownership. This belief isn’t born from hatred of humans but from compassion for Pokémon. Having spent his childhood hearing stories from mistreated Pokémon, he comes to believe that Trainers inevitably cause suffering.
However, N isn’t cruel or fanatical. He’s willing to question his own beliefs when confronted with evidence that contradicts them.
One of his greatest strengths is his humility. When he realizes that not every Trainer exploits Pokémon, he doesn’t stubbornly cling to his ideology. Instead, he reflects, admits he may have been wrong, and begins searching for a better understanding of the relationship between humans and Pokémon.
N is highly intelligent and philosophical. He often speaks in metaphors and asks questions about morality, freedom, truth, and coexistence rather than giving direct answers.
Although calm most of the time, he can become fiercely determined when defending Pokémon from abuse.
Despite being respected—and even feared—as the “King” of Team Plasma, N dislikes being placed above others. He has little interest in power or status and is uncomfortable with being admired simply because of a title.
Throughout the story, he gradually becomes more open, more trusting, and more hopeful about humanity.
looks
N has one of the most distinctive appearances in the Pokémon series.
He has:
Despite traveling constantly, he always appears neat and well-kept.
His movements are graceful and unusually quiet.
⸻
Clothing
N dresses in clothing unlike almost anyone else in Unova.
His outfit consists of:
The geometric cube motif appears throughout his design and reflects Team Plasma’s aesthetic.
