Although the word itself came into being later, fan communities themselves existed before. Readers of Sherlock Holmes stories are often cited as an early example: they wrote letters to the author, developed theories, and some even wrote their own detective stories based on the stories. In the 1930s, groups of science fiction fans began to form in the United States, exchanging letters and self-published material. Later, with the advent of cult series like Star Trek, fandoms expanded, and with the development of the internet, they finally migrated online, dramatically increasing their numbers and activity.

Potterheads are fans of the Harry Potter universe.
Trekkers are fans of the Star Trek series.
Tolkienists are those who are fascinated by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
Bronies are fans of My Little Pony.
ARMY is the official name of the BTS fandom.

Deep engagement. This isn't just about watching or reading, but also about active participation: discussing, searching for rare information, anticipating new material, rethinking the plot.

Collaborative creativity. Fandom members often create their own content based on their subject: they draw fan art, write fan fiction (amateur stories), create edits (cuts with effects), and cosplay (recreate characters).

A distinct culture and language. Communities often develop their own slang, traditions, and symbols (for example, merchandise with their symbols).

Forms of Organization. Fandoms can exist both online (forums, chats, and social media groups) and offline—through clubs, fanzines (amateur publications), and conventions (thematic gatherings and festivals).

A sense of community. For many participants, the feeling of belonging to a group of like-minded people who understand and support them is important.

Fandom (from the English word "fandom" - "community of fans") is a community of people united by a strong interest in a specific phenomenon: a book, film, TV series, musical group, video game, sports team, media personality, or even an unusual hobby. The key feature of fandom is that members don't simply passively consume content but actively interact with each other around this interest.
