The Peugeot 206 RC (known as the GTI 180 in the UK) masterfully blended understated aggression with the iconic, cab-forward silhouette of the standard 206 hatchback. Its exterior design was defined by subtle yet impactful performance cues, including a deeper front bumper with a mesh grille, a prominent color-coded roof spoiler to increase high-speed downforce, and striking 17-inch "Atlantis" multi-spoke alloy wheels that aggressively filled the arches. Chrome-tipped twin exhaust pipes completed the sporty rear view. Inside, the design leaned heavily into its rally heritage, replacing standard seating with heavily bolstered, Alcantara-trimmed bucket seats featuring integrated headrests. The cabin further emphasized its hot-hatch pedigree with aluminum pedals, a matching aluminum gear knob, and carbon-fiber-effect trim detailing on the instrument binnacle and center console.

The Peugeot 206 was born out of a strategic necessity to replace the iconic but aging 205, a car that had single-handedly saved Peugeot's finances in the 1980s. By the mid-1990s, Peugeot mistakenly believed that superminis were declining in popularity and chose to rely on the smaller 106 and the larger 306 instead of building a direct successor. However, rivals like the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo continued to dominate the market, forcing Peugeot management to reverse course and greenlight a brand-new supermini project in 1994. Under the design leadership of Murat Günak and Gérard Welter, the team abandoned the boxy straight lines of the past in favor of a radical, aggressively curved, and feline-like aesthetic.
