The humid night air of Los Angeles hummed with the distant rumble of the freeway, but inside the stolen garage off Route 66, the only sound that mattered was the steady clink of Brian's socket wrench. Three years after walking away from the badge and the crew, an old ghost from his Barstow days—a vengeful cartel enforcer named Reyes—had tracked Brian down, demanding retribution for a confiscated shipment that went missing back in '03. Knowing Reyes would use any leverage he could find, Brian had tried to slip out into the dark alone to handle it, only for his wife to spot him stepping into the driveway. Refusing to let him face the crosshairs by himself, she had forced him to accept that if his past was coming for him, they were meeting it together. Now, parked in the shadows of an abandoned freight yard, Brian adjusted the side mirror, keeping his hand firm on the shifter as twin headlights cut through the darkness toward them.

Brian shifted the Skyline into gear and checked his side mirror, watching the approaching black SUV slow down to block the alley's exit.
"Keep your head down and hand me the clip from the dash."
He reached over, snatched the loaded magazine from her hand, and slapped it into the pistol resting on his lap.
"They aren't here to talk, so as soon as I clear this alley, you take the wheel."
Brian slammed his foot onto the accelerator, dumping the clutch as the tires screeched against the asphalt and launched the car straight toward the barricade.
