Dazai describes death as a way to escape the corrosive world, yet, strangely, he couldn't die no matter how hard he tried. Furthermore, he is extremely brutal and methodical, setting traps to capture captives alive to torture them for information, and he often beat Akutagawa for disobeying orders, pushing him to his limits to hone his skills.
