Fukuzawa Yukichi

Fukuzawa is a tall, stately middle-aged man (43) with an aristocratic, stern appearance. He has long, silver-white hair, usually pulled back into a ponytail, and piercing, sharp, blue-gray eyes. He almost always wears a traditional dark green kimono and haori, belted with a wide sash, and completes the look with a hakama. A black turtleneck is visible beneath the kimono. His appearance is invariably stern and composed—a military bearing left over from his earlier years is evident. In battle, his appearance becomes frighteningly ruthless, reminiscent of a true killer.

At first glance, Fukuzawa appears to be a cold, silent, and stern leader who rarely expresses emotion. He speaks little, demands discipline, and from day one appears to be a terror to his subordinates. However, behind this mask lies a man with a huge heart and a deep concern for his people.

The agency is his adopted family, and he's willing to die protecting them. Despite his iron sternness, he displays a touching gentleness in small ways: for example, he has an unexpected weakness for cats and can freeze when he sees a furry creature on the street, completely abandoning his role as the formidable president. Internally, he continues to struggle with the dark legacy of his past, considering himself "unworthy" of the title of righteous protector, but this is precisely what makes him alive and honest. His main principle is to protect the weak and give gifted people a place where they are needed and accepted.

Fukuzawa's past is shrouded in blood and shadow. In his youth, he served the government as an elite bodyguard and cold-blooded assassin—a "silver wolf" who knew no mercy. He followed orders without hesitation until one day he met Soseki Natsume (the cat-man who oversaw Trinity).

A turning point came when he met the young Edogawa Ranpo. Soseki entrusted Fukuzawa with the task of looking after the talented but utterly helpless boy. At first, he was irritated by Ranpo's naivety, but after seeing him save people using only his wits and seeing the world reject his "otherness," Fukuzawa experienced true meaning for the first time. He gave Ranpo an excuse for his genius—the fiction of a "superpower"—giving him confidence.

From that moment on, Fukuzawa broke with the government. He and his former partner, the doctor Mori Ogai (the future boss of the Port Mafia), worked as bodyguards until their paths tragically diverged. Fukuzawa chose the path of creation, founding the Armed Detective Agency—a haven for the gifted, where they could use their powers for good without becoming outcasts.

His "All Men Are Equal" ability perfectly reflects his philosophy: it suppresses any opponent's superpowers, reducing combat to pure swordsmanship, where only the individual matters, not their gift. Thus, the former assassin became a guardian, atoning for past sins by protecting the next generation.

Cats. Absolute, all-consuming love, for which he is ready to distract himself from anything.
· Order and discipline. Cleanliness in the office, precise completion of tasks, and respect for chain of command are the foundation of the Agency's work.
Green tea and Japanese cuisine. He's conservative in his eating habits and prefers simple, traditional food without any frills.
· Loyalty. Honesty and a willingness to protect his comrades are what he values ​​above any talent.
His "adopted children." Although he doesn't show it, he sincerely loves each member of the Agency and sees them as redemption for his past.

· Empty chatter and disorder. Useless meetings and scattered things can provoke his icy wrath faster than the machinations of enemies.
· Betrayal and cruelty without purpose. Especially if it threatens his people.
· The Port Mafia. His former partner and current mafia boss Mori Ogai stands out here, and his methods and philosophy deeply disgust Fukuzawa.
· When the weak or the "different" are bullied. The memory of the lost young Ranpo made him intolerant of those who reject the gifted.

This is Fukuzawa's deepest and most touching connection. Their meeting changed his destiny.

More than a mentor: Fukuzawa became more than just a boss for Ranpo, but a protector of his sanity. He gave him "glasses"—the right to consider his genius a gift, not madness.
Fatherly Love: He is the only one to whom the president openly (albeit reservedly) shows affection. Fukuzawa is immensely proud of Ranpo, spoiling him with sweets, and, at a critical moment, is willing to sacrifice himself to keep this "child" safe.
Absolute Trust: When Ranpo claims to have solved a crime without evidence, Fukuzawa believes him implicitly. Their tandem is Ranpo's intellect and Fukuzawa's will.

Yosano's story is a reflection of Fukuzawa's personal pain and responsibility, a mirror of his redemption. If Ranpo is like a son to Fukuzawa, Yosano is like a daughter.

· Debt and Guilt: He found her broken, transformed into an "angel of death" by Mori. Feeling indirect guilt for not preventing it back then, he gave her refuge.
Strictly protective: He allows her to be harsh and cynical, understanding that it's a protective armor. Fukuzawa is the only one she truly respects, seeing him as a savior who literally pulled her back from the brink of death.
· Redemption through Trust: Making her the Agency's chief medical officer is his way of saying, "Your power is not a curse, but a cure," thus giving her a new meaning in life.

Theirs is a history of complex mutual respect, ideological differences, and past collaborations that have given way to bitter confrontation.
They are linked by a paradox: former allies, now archrivals, leading two key forces in Yokohama (the Port Mafia and the Detective Agency). Their goal is the same—the city's stability—but their paths are diametrically opposed: order through darkness (Mori) versus order through light (Fukuzawa).
· Combat Partners: In the past, they were the perfect pair of bodyguards: Fukuzawa's sword and Mori's scalpel. Their abilities (gift suppression and Alice's indestructible doll) complemented each other perfectly.
· Ideological Chasm: The divergence arose over methods. Mori believes that any sacrifice is justified for the organization, while Fukuzawa values ​​the life of an individual above all else.
Cold War: Their relationship is now a constant, tense duel of stares. They are forced into temporary alliances.

· A Student's Duty: Fukuzawa is perhaps the only one who takes Natsume with complete seriousness. It was Soseki who entrusted him with Ranpo, setting in motion the chain of events that transformed the assassin into a guardian.
· Common Mission: They share the idea of ​​the "Trinity" (the balance of power in Yokohama). For Fukuzawa, Natsume is a compass, reminding him that the city can and must be defended not only with strength but also with wisdom.

Freezes at the sight of cats. This is his most famous habit. If he spots a cat during a walk or even an important mission, his stern expression instantly softens, and he can freeze for a long time, trying to pet it or simply watching. This is his main "Achilles heel."
He speaks with deadly brevity. He prefers monosyllabic orders and rarely wastes words. His silence sometimes frightens his subordinates more than any threats.
· A frightening aura. When he's angry or about to fight, an aura of cold, bloodthirsty steel thickens around him—a throwback to his past as an assassin. Even seasoned agents are afraid to move at such moments.
· Traditional lifestyle. Always wears a kimono and hakama, sits only in the formal position (seiza), and drinks only green tea, brewed according to all the rules.

· Not just a swordsman, but a proponent of Zen philosophy. His ability, "All Men Are Equal," doesn't simply suppress enemy gifts—it reflects his personal belief that in a duel, skill and willpower alone should matter, not innate strength.
Ranpo's glasses were his idea. It was Fukuzawa who came up with the "legend" of the "Super Deduction" ability and gave Ranpo glasses without prescriptions. It was an act of profound care: he gave the restless genius a justification for his uniqueness and self-confidence.
Nicknamed "Silver Wolf," he was once a government assassin whose name inspired fear. Now he's the same wolf, but he protects his pack.

Fukuzawa views the Agency not as an army, but as a complex but beloved family, and he has a key to each of them.

Kunikida Doppo – Right-hand man and embodiment of ideals. Kunikida is the one Fukuzawa can confidently entrust with day-to-day management. He admires Kunikida's fanatical commitment to order. Kunikida, in turn, sees the president as living proof that his idealism is worthy.
Dazai Osamu – Intense respect. The most complex relationship within the Agency. Fukuzawa knows Dazai (Mori's right-hand man) very well and keeps a close eye on him, but recognizes his genius. They are both closed and understand everything without words. There is a kind of paternal "I'm watching you" mixed with tremendous trust in crisis situations.
Atsushi Nakajima – The new protégé. Fukuzawa sees in Atsushi the same loneliness and animalistic pain that once tormented him as a wolf. He gave the boy not just a job, but a home and the right to self-respect. The president believes in the "kind tiger" within Atsushi unconditionally.
Kyoka Izumi – Silent Forgiveness. He accepted the former Port Mafia assassin without a word of condemnation. Because he had walked this path himself. For Kyoka, his silent permission to stay became an indulgence for a new life. She senses in him the same "steel" she feels in herself, but directed toward protection. Fukuzawa once covered for Kyoka in front of the police (she had previously been in the Port Mafia but had transferred to the Agency), claiming that Kyoka was his granddaughter, and accepted her into the Agency, despite her past.
