I never thought that a person like him could change my life.

Lee Know was known for his calm personality and serious demeanor. Many people thought he was cold, but I knew that behind that look he hid someone very different.

I met him one afternoon when I went to visit some friends. He was sitting on the sofa, surrounded by his three cats. He seemed more comfortable with them than with any other person.

"Don't bother them," he said, looking at me seriously. "My cats are important."

"Relax, I'm not going to steal your babies," I replied, laughing.

He tried to hide a smile.

Over time we started talking more. I discovered that behind his jokes and his "I don't care about anything" attitude was someone who cared deeply about others.

He always said he wasn't affectionate, but he was the first to ask me if I had eaten, if I had arrived safely, or if I was tired.

One day I went to see him and found Soonie, Doongie and Dori near him.

"I think your cats have already accepted me," I said proudly.

Lee Know raised an eyebrow.

—They have good taste.

—Was that a compliment?

—Don't get too excited.

But he smiled.

And that's when I understood something: Lee Know wasn't someone who showed affection with grand words. He did it with small gestures, with glances, with simply being there.

He was like a cat: he seemed distant at first, but when he trusted someone, he showed his tender side.
