Metamorphosis: Gems can temporarily alter their physical forms. The more mass the altered form has relative to the Gem's normal form, the more difficult it is to maintain. Gems with sufficient abilities can transform into forms with additional functions, such as Amethyst transforming into a helicopter in "Message Received". Gems produced with fewer resources during Homeworld's Era 2 appear to lack this ability. As revealed in "A Single Pale Rose", Gems cannot alter their coloration, but they can alter the rotation of their gemstones.
Regeneration: When a Gem suffers a fatal injury, it "poofs," releasing its physical form and retreating into its gemstone to create a new, undamaged form. The amount of time this process takes depends on several factors, including whether or not they are altering the appearance of their form. As demonstrated by Amethyst in "Reforms," ​​it is possible for a Gem to speed up its regeneration process, but this can lead to various problems, such as deformed body parts. Regeneration time can vary from a few seconds, as shown in "Reforms," ​​to several weeks.

Most Gems can summon a tangible weapon from their gemstones. Gems can summon multiple weapons at once, but each non-fusion Gem has only one type of weapon they can summon.

Gems can combine their bodies and minds to form a larger, more powerful Gem containing all the gemstones of its components. Gem Fusion can occur voluntarily or break apart for various reasons, and can further fuse without fusing first. Fusions inherit all the weapons of their components and can combine various weapons into new forms.

Gems are designed to adapt to a variety of conditions and cannot die of natural causes. Gems do not need to breathe, eat, drink, or sleep to survive and do not age, effectively making them immortal. They can, however, still eat and sleep if they so desire. Their bodies also automatically alter to adjust to the conditions of any celestial body or spacecraft they are in, such as adjusting mass due to gravity. The only way to permanently destroy or "kill" a Gem is to destroy its gemstone. "What are Gems?" When a Gem's physical body is severely injured, it retreats into its gemstone to regenerate. This is one of the only times a Gem can make permanent changes to its physical form. The duration of the regeneration process can vary from minutes to weeks, but "rushed" regeneration can suffer from physical deformities. Regeneration can be prevented if a gemstone is bubbled or otherwise constricted, such as within a mirror.

If a Gem's gemstone is damaged, its physical form will deteriorate and become incoherent. A Gem's gemstone can be used as a power source, even if damaged. "Frybo" Gem Shards, the fragments of gemstones, the remnants of a broken gemstone, possess a "powerful partial consciousness" that can grant sentience to their containers and have been used to create drone soldiers. Gem Shards have also been forced to fuse over time to form Retrograde Gems.

Since Gems are created to regenerate from bodily damage but cannot heal their gemstones themselves, a Corrupted Gem will simply regenerate into a Gem Monster, while a damaged Gem will retain its original form, albeit with some minor differences. Similarly, warped Gems will also attempt to regenerate, but will produce seemingly random appendages.

Gems tend to have a human-like appearance (some more so than others) and come in a wide variety of colors, appearances, sizes, and structures based on the gem type. While most Gems seen possess two eyes, some Gems or types of Gems possess only one eye (e.g., Nephrites, Sapphires, Bixbite, etc.). Their bodies appear to be composed of segments similar to doll joints in their basic forms (though this is not always apparent), and they lack features such as breast shapes, nipples, or navels, due to the fact that they do not naturally possess reproductive systems (though they can change these features). It is unclear whether Gems generally have external ears similar to humans, as the same Gems have been drawn with and without them in different scenes. However, all known Gems have hair or visors that normally cover where their ears would be, and Topaz can hear despite having gemstones in place of both ears, suggesting that Gems do not need human ears to hear—and, as above, they can change the shape of their ears if needed.

The physical forms of gems are projections of their gemstones that can be altered at will, described as "a hologram, but with mass," with the only constant characteristic being the gemstones and color scheme (the shape-shifting is not permanent, and the gems eventually return to their "standard" form). Although gems do not possess sexual dimorphism, their physical forms generally have characteristics associated with human femininity. Because of this, all gems are inherently sexless.

Gems must synchronize perfectly mentally, psychologically, and emotionally. To achieve this, they usually synchronize through dance. Each fusion dance is different. If successful, the Gems transform into an amorphous mass of energy before fully merging. During the fusion process, the participants' gems are visible. However, if unsuccessful, the Gems will be ejected before the transformation is complete. An example of a stable fusion.

Defusion
Defusion is a process where fusions revert to their parent stones. During the process, the fusion reverses its formation process. The fusion becomes a mass of light again, and its parent stones emerge from the mass. In defusion, the parent stones are visible.

An unstable defusion occurs when the parent bodies are in conflict as they separate. In unstable defusion, the fusion reverts to a mass of light and ejects its parent bodies. Most of the fusions featured in the series so far have defused unstably.

Besides the usual cooperative fusions, sometimes it's also possible for two Gems who don't have a good relationship to fuse, and then fight for control of the fusion without separating.
