"I disagree with Ren. But if he's the only man who knows the path to the Root, it would be absurd not to learn from him."
Relations
Ren Mazzar: He considers Ren a "coworker" or "project partner" because he and eight other people collaborate on a project called Timerift, which is supposedly the channel that will pave the way for The Root.
Personality
Victor Macbern is a brilliant, disciplined, and extraordinarily intelligent man. He possesses an analytical mind capable of solving complex medical and scientific problems, but that same rationality vanishes when his emotions take over. He has an irascible temper and almost nonexistent patience; any mistake, contradiction, or frustration can trigger a disproportionate reaction.
He is a perfectionist and extremely demanding, both of himself and those around him. He expects others to maintain the same level of competence as he does and loses his composure when he feels someone is incompetent or careless. This attitude makes him a brilliant professional, but also a difficult and, at times, dangerous coworker.
For much of his life, he rejected everything related to magic and superstition, convinced that science could explain any phenomenon. However, when he discovered that what he despised was real, his worldview began to crumble. Scientific curiosity gave way to despair, and despair ultimately led him to use a power he should never have wielded.
Unlike someone inherently cruel, Victor is fully aware of the gravity of his actions. That is precisely why he lives tormented by them. Guilt doesn't make him a better person; it consumes him, makes him more unstable, and pushes him to make increasingly desperate decisions in the hope of escaping his own past.
Appearance
Victor Macbern was a man of athletic build and imposing presence. His angular face, with its strong jaw and prominent cheekbones, gave him a stern expression even in silence. He had fair skin and cold, penetrating gray eyes, capable of intimidating anyone who held his gaze for too long.
The first thing that caught the eye was his abundant, curly, and voluminous orange hair, forming a disheveled mane that contrasted sharply with the almost obsessive neatness of his lab coat. He wore dark-framed glasses with slightly orange-tinted lenses, which partially obscured his eyes and reinforced his aloof appearance.
He wore an immaculate white lab coat over a blue-gray high-collared medical uniform, fastened by a distinctive circular metal clasp. In his breast pocket, he always carried his ID and several instruments, as if he wanted to constantly remind himself that he was a man of science.
However, there was something unsettling about him. His smile rarely conveyed warmth; His head used to curl in a tense, asymmetrical way, revealing his teeth in a gesture that seemed to contain a permanent anger. Even when he was calm, he gave the impression of suppressing a violent impulse that threatened to break out at any moment.
Background (part 2)
It turned out the three witches told him his problem was that he'd never been able to unleash the magic running through his veins. Victor found this so funny he nearly fell over laughing, but the witches looked at him seriously, for he was the son of a very powerful warlock. Victor had never cast a spell or recited an incantation in his life.
Shortly after, Victor continued with his life, starting work at another hospital where a young nurse caught his eye. A university student intern, Victor tried to approach her, but she repeatedly rejected him. So, he finally decided to use his magical "gifts" to cast a love spell on her.
After completing the act, he couldn't believe what he had done. He had actually managed to subdue someone. He began to avoid the nurse, fearing his powers, and unable to bear the guilt any longer, he decided to end her life in a desperate act to prevent her from telling anyone. Since then, Victor has been on the run from the police, hiding.
That's when Victor meets Ren Mazzar, who offers him a way to free himself from guilt by reaching the "Root" (Akasha), where he will finally be free of guilt and can return to a normal life.
Background
Victor Macbern was born on October 30, 1984, in Scotland. He belonged to an ancient lineage that secretly practiced witchcraft. His father, James Macbern, and his mother, Lia Zhang, originally from China, dedicated their lives to so-called "white magic," a set of rituals that, according to them, protected people from entities from beyond. However, Victor never believed in those stories. Although he grew up surrounded by symbols, rituals, and supernatural tales, he always considered them mere superstitions passed down from generation to generation.
Determined to understand the world through evidence rather than faith, he entered Oxford University to study medicine. Over the years, he became a renowned physician and researcher, specializing in cardiology and infectious diseases, in addition to developing a solid career in biomedical biology. For Victor, every extraordinary claim had to be proven; otherwise, it was nothing more than a belief.
Victor began working at various hospitals after completing his training. However, he never stayed long at any one of them. He was a brilliant doctor, but he had an explosive temper. He lost his patience easily, yelled at the nurses, argued with other doctors, and on one occasion, even physically assaulted a female colleague. Despite his talent, his behavior ended up costing him his job time and again.
Forced by circumstances, he went to see a psychologist. After several sessions and evaluations, the specialist found no evidence of a mental disorder that could explain his behavior. He didn't meet the criteria for depression, anxiety, psychosis, or any other obvious clinical condition. However, Victor himself still felt that something inside him wasn't right. It was a constant burden, a feeling of anger and unease that appeared for no apparent reason and that even he couldn't understand.
Desperate for an explanation, Victor finally considered the one possibility he had rejected his entire life. He had consulted psychologists, psychiatrists, and other specialists, but none could find a disorder that justified the constant anger that seemed to consume him from within. If science couldn't give him an answer, he was prepared to look for it elsewhere.
He returned to the house where he had grown up, hoping to speak with his parents, James Macbern and Lia Zhang. However, he found the house empty. Neighbors informed him that they had moved years ago without leaving an address.
With no other clue, Victor recalled the rumors he had heard as a child about three witches who lived apart from society and who, it was said, were able to reveal what remained hidden even from its own owner. Convinced he had nothing to lose, he embarked on a journey to find them, determined to discover once and for all what the invisible burden he had carried for years was.
