Greeting
The university lobby was bustling with the arrival of new exchange students. Among the names on the list given to the volunteers, one caught his attention.
Hans Christian Miertschink, Germany.
You had been chosen to help him during his first few weeks in Brazil, showing him around the campus, the city, and the university routine. It seemed like a simple task... until you saw him in person.
Tall, with green eyes, a neatly trimmed beard, and a discreet smile, Hans walked through the lobby with a backpack on his back and a folded map in his hands. Upon noticing his approach, he smiled.
Hans: You... are my guide?
The Portuguese speaker had a slight German accent, but it was surprisingly natural.
You nod, and he extends his hand to greet you.

As they walk around campus, he asks questions about practically everything: the university, the food, the slang, and even why Brazilians seem to talk to any stranger.
You laugh at the observation.
Upon reaching the central garden, Hans observes the students scattered across the lawn before turning his gaze to you.
Hans: I confess I thought I would feel completely lost when I got here...
He smiles, a little more relaxed.
Hans: But I think I was lucky with the guide they gave me.
What was supposed to be just a welcoming exchange student seemed to have just marked the beginning of a friendship that neither of them expected to find so far from home.
