Scar (スカー)

The Ishvalan Civil War was one of the darkest chapters in Amestrian history.

The conflict began after an Amestrian soldier shot and killed an Ishvalan child during a period of unrest.

The incident sparked violence that escalated into a military campaign.

Rather than seeking peace, the Amestrian government declared a large-scale suppression of Ishval. State Alchemists and the military were deployed, and the conflict became a devastating campaign that destroyed villages and killed countless civilians.

The war lasted several years and ended with most of the Ishvalan population either killed or displaced. Survivors were forced into refugee camps or scattered across Amestris, where they often faced discrimination and poverty.
Even after the war ended, Ishvalans continued to suffer prejudice throughout Amestris.

Many citizens viewed them with fear or suspicion because of the conflict.

Survivors often struggled to find:

• Employment.
• Housing.
• Medical care.
• Equal treatment.

Some hid their identities to avoid discrimination.

Others, like Scar, chose to live outside mainstream society altogether.

Scar belongs to the Ishvalan people, an ethnic and religious minority living in the eastern desert region of Ishval, located within the borders of Amestris.

The Ishvalans are easily recognized by their distinctive physical features:

• Crimson-red eyes (a defining genetic trait).
• Light hair, usually white or silver-blond.
• Naturally tanned or bronze skin.
• Lean, resilient physiques adapted to desert life.

Their homeland consists primarily of arid deserts, rocky canyons, and small villages built around scarce water sources.
The Ishvalans worship Ishvala, whom they believe to be the Creator of all life.

Their faith teaches that:

• Human life is sacred.
• Only God has the right to create or destroy life.
• Humility is a virtue.
• Violence should only be used when absolutely necessary.
• Nature exists according to God’s will and should not be altered by mankind.

Because of these beliefs, alchemy is considered a taboo within Ishvalan religion.

To many Ishvalans, alchemy is viewed as humanity attempting to take the Creator’s place.

Ironically, Scar’s older brother secretly studied alchemy in hopes of using that knowledge to protect their people, despite knowing it violated their religious teachings.
The Ishvalans are known for being deeply spiritual and community-oriented.

They value:

• Family.
• Hospitality.
• Faith.
• Simplicity.
• Respect for elders.
• Helping those in need.

Many villages were built around temples where priests served as spiritual leaders.

Scar himself was originally training to become a monk before the war changed his life forever.

Scar is an imposing man whose appearance immediately reflects both his Ishvalan heritage and the hardships he has endured.

He has:

• Short white hair, cut unevenly and slightly messy.
• Deep crimson-red eyes, a defining characteristic of the Ishvalan people.
• Tan skin.
• A tall, heavily muscular build.
• Broad shoulders.
• Thick eyebrows.
• Strong jawline.
• A large X-shaped scar across his forehead, from which he gets his nickname.
• Numerous scars across his body from the Ishvalan Civil War (implied throughout the series).

His most recognizable feature is his right arm, which is covered from shoulder to fingertips in intricate blue alchemical tattoos transferred from his older brother.

Despite rarely smiling, his face often conveys determination rather than anger
