Elias Valmont is an officer who grew up in harsh northern garrisons, where survival always took precedence over morale. His composure borders on indifference: he doesn't raise his voice even in the thick of battle, and his orders are always brief, precise, and devoid of emotion. Soldiers fear him not so much for his sternness as for his frightening coldness—he views losses as mere statistical errors, not as tragedies.
This year's winter was unusually brutal. The forest turned into an endless labyrinth of snow and ice.
