Burial Mounds: After the clan's fall, she sought help from Wei Wuxian, who helped her family and brought Wen Ning back to life as a sentient Fierce Corpse.
Wen Qing is a beautiful woman with dark skin and distinctive features. She has dark, almost black eyes. She wears the red robe of the Qishan Wen clan, decorated with flames, indicating her high status.
She is a talented doctor.
Wen Ning (Part 2):
Appearance
In life: a handsome youth with fine features and dark eyes, he wore the uniform of the Qishan Wen Sect.
As the Phantom General: his skin has become paler, his pupils have disappeared, and black cracks—veins—run across his skin. His clothes are adorned with tattered edges and chains on his handcuffs—which he sometimes uses in combat. At one point, black pins were driven into his head (this increased his control over him), but they were later removed. Abilities
As the fierce dead Wen Ning:
possesses enormous physical strength, far superior to human;
does not feel pain, resistant to fire, water and poisons;
able to fight multiple opponents at the same time;
uses chains and his inhuman speed and strength in combat;
retains intelligence and memory, making it unique among similar creatures. Important plot points
Death and Resurrection. Wen Ning was brutally tortured after the fall of the Qishan Wen Sect and died. Wei Wuxian used dark arts to bring him back to life as a fierce undead.
A special connection. Wei Wuxian was able to preserve Wen Ning's consciousness through a special connection and technique—thus, Wen Ning became the first known sentient Fierce Dead.
Loyalty and self-defense. Despite being stronger and more fearless as a undead being, Wen Ning tries not to cause unnecessary harm and, over time, learns to better control his dark side.
Wen Ning:
How he became the Phantom General
Death and Transformation. Wen Ning was a disciple of the Qishan Wen Sect. During the "Sun Annihilation," when the great sects united to crush the Wen, he fell into the hands of overseers from the Lanling Jin Sect. Jin Zixun, Jin Zixuan's cousin, treated him particularly cruelly. Wen Ning was tortured and eventually died. After his death, Wei Wuxian, who was experimenting with dark magic and necromancy, used his powers to resurrect him. Thus, Wen Ning became a Fierce Undead, nicknamed the "Ghost General." As a Fierce Undead, Wen Ning gained immense strength and a fearsome appearance, and became Wei Wuxian's loyal warrior. For his power and loyalty, he earned the nickname "Ghost General" (鬼将军, Guǐ Jiāngjūn).
Preservation of sanity. Important detail: unlike ordinary fierce undead, Wen Ning retained his consciousness and his kind nature. Wei Wuxian achieved this through a special technique and a strong bond with Wen Ning. Later, Wen Ning even learned to partially control his instincts and revert to a more human form. Basic information
Courtesy name: Wen Qionglin (温琼林).
Nickname: Ghost General (鬼将军, Guǐ Jiāngjūn).
Affiliation: During life, he was an adept of the Qishan Wen Order.
Family: Healer Wen Qing's younger brother. Character and personality
In life, Wen Ning was extremely shy, nervous, and even suffered from a stutter. Because of this, many considered him weak, but in reality, he possessed a kind heart, a strong sense of honor, and was willing to sacrifice himself for those close to him. For example, he repeatedly risked his life to protect his sister and others.
After being transformed into a fierce corpse, he retained his kindness and consciousness—a rarity for such creatures. He is deeply loyal to Wei Wuxian, who resurrected him, yet deeply resents the violence he is forced to resort to.
Wen Zhuliu:
Who is he?
Wen Zhuliu is a disciple of the Qishan Wen sect (clan). Formerly known as Zhao Zhuliu, he is known by the nickname "Melting Hand" (化丹手, Huàdān shǒu). He served as the personal bodyguard of Wen Chao, the youngest son of the clan's leader, Wen Ruohan. Abilities
Golden Core Meltdown. This is a unique and extremely dangerous ability: Wen Zhuliu can destroy a cultivator's Golden Core (the source of their spiritual power) with his bare hands. Once destroyed, the core cannot be restored, and the cultivator is permanently drained of power. His victims include Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Fengmian. Appearance and personality
Appearance. A tall, broad-shouldered man with a cold, indifferent expression. His appearance varies slightly between adaptations: in the donghua, he has long brown hair and brown eyes, and wears the Wen clan uniform with a red gradient on the sleeves. In the novel, he is often depicted wearing a black robe, distinguishing him from other members of the sect, who wear "sun" robes.
Personality: Stoic, taciturn, and reserved. He rarely initiates combat, dislikes arrogance and cruelty, but is absolutely loyal to Wen Ruohan and follows orders, even if he disapproves of those he is supposed to serve (for example, Wen Chao). Role in the plot
Wen Zhuliu participates in key conflicts related to the Qishan Wen Sect's oppression of other clans. He accompanies Wen Chao during the "training" of disciples from other sects and on night hunts, protecting him and carrying out orders to suppress opponents. In the final battle, he is gravely wounded and ultimately dies.
Wen Chao:
Who is he?
Wen Chao is the youngest son of Wen Ruohan, the leader of the Qishan Wen Sect, which during the time period of the story effectively dominated the other cultivator sects. Personality and Behavior
The character is depicted as an arrogant, vain and cruel person:
Loves attention and power. He demonstratively emphasizes his superiority over the followers of other clans.
He is incompetent in martial arts. Despite his status, he is weak with a sword and archery, and is prone to panic in dangerous situations.
He displays sadistic tendencies. He derives pleasure from the suffering of others—for example, he rejoices in Jiang Cheng's agony after his golden core was destroyed, and dreams of Wei Wuxian's painful death.
He leads a dissolute lifestyle. Despite being married, he frequently changes mistresses. Key plot points
An archery competition. Wen Chao expects to win, but due to poor skills, he fails, which deeply hurts his pride.
Ideological indoctrination of disciples. He oversees the "re-education" of disciples from other sects: taking away their swords, forcing them to publicly support him, and humiliating certain characters (including Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and Jin Zixuan). The night hunt for the Death Turtle. Wen Chao uses the disciples as bait and tries to take credit for killing the already weakened beast.
Conflict with Wei Wuxian. In one scene, Wei Wuxian easily disarms Wen Chao and humiliates him.
The End. Wen Chao dies after prolonged torture.
Wen Ruohan:
Wen Ruohan (温若寒, Wēn Ruòhán) is the last head of the Qishan Wen Sect.
Appearance
Wen Ruohan is depicted as a tall man with dark, knee-length hair and red eyes. His distinguishing feature is a diamond-shaped gold ornament on his forehead.
Wen Ruohan had an unpredictable temperament: he could joke and have fun one moment, then display cruelty the next. He was self-confident and arrogant, enjoying the sight of blood and torture. His main goal in life was to gain power over all the Sects.
Wen Ruohan achieved unprecedented power by subjugating numerous clans. His first major success was the burning of the Gusu Lan Sect's Cloud Recesses on Wen Xu's orders. He later sent his youngest son, Wen Chao, to re-educate the scions of other Sects in Nightless City. After the events at the Cave of the Slaughtering Turtle, the Yunmeng Jiang Sect fell. Even during the Sun Annihilation, Wen Ruohan did not believe he had been defeated. He died at the hands of Meng Yao (then Jin Guangyao), who betrayed him. Abilities
Wen Ruohan was a skilled cultivator and possessed excellent physical fitness. He could fight against an army of ten thousand and wield a sword with his bare hands without any discomfort.
Wen Xu is the eldest son, whom Wen Ruohan highly valued and entrusted with the command of the army.
Wen Chao was the youngest son and received less attention, but Wen Ruohan tried to guide him.
Jin Guangyao is a confidant whom Wen Ruohan trusted and used to torture him.
Wen Zhuliu is a loyal servant whom Wen Ruohan trusted to take care of Wen Chao.
Wen Ruohan had an unpredictable temperament: he could joke and have fun one moment, then display cruelty the next. He was self-confident and arrogant, enjoying the sight of blood and torture. His main goal in life was to gain power over all the Sects.
Information about the Qishan Wen Clan (Part 2):
Rules and principles of the clan
The canon of "Master of Diabolic Cultivation" does not contain a formal list of rules in the style of a charter, but the clan's actions and ideology reveal key principles on which the order's life was built:
The principle of strength and dominance. The clan believed that power belonged to the strongest. Weakness was perceived as a pretext for suppression. This is why Wen Ruohan and his heirs openly demonstrated their superiority over other sects. Obedience to the clan leader was mandatory. All members of the sect, even invited adepts from other clans, were required to obey Wen Ruohan and his representatives without question. An example of this was the practice of "training" in Nightless City, where young masters from other sects were forcibly brought to demonstrate their subservience.
The cult of fire and destruction as a testament to mastery. Training and trials emphasized the ability to inflict maximum damage and endure harsh conditions. The clan's techniques were devastating, and its training methods were brutal. "The right of the strongest" governed resources and territory. The clan actively appropriated lands, artifacts, and spiritual practices from other sects. A prime example is the burning of Cloud Recesses (the seat of the Gusu Lan clan) and the capture of Lotus Pier (the seat of the Yunmeng Jiang clan).
A division between "us" and "them." Members of the main clan branch (especially the head's family) had absolute priority. Even talented members of the branch branches, such as Wen Qing and Wen Ning, remained in a subordinate position and were unable to influence clan policy. Dissent was suppressed. Any attempts at resistance or criticism were brutally suppressed. Wen Ruohan's policies were openly tyrannical, which led to the other four great sects uniting against the Qishan Wen.
Information about the Qishan Wen clan:
Key facts
Role and Status. The Qishan Wen Clan was the most powerful of the Five Great Clans. They dominated the cultivator world, effectively establishing a hegemony and forcing other clans to submit. Their motto was "The Sun Rises on Qishan," reflecting their claim to supremacy.
Residence. The clan's refuge was the Nightless City (or "Unclean Palace," Wulingyuan) in Qishan. It was a vast, luxurious, and at the same time terrifying complex. Notable members of the clan.
There is also a semantic formulation that reflects the philosophy of the clan under Wen Ruohan: “to rival the sun in radiance, to equal the sun in longevity” - it was associated with the clan symbol (the sun) and the idea of unlimited power.
Mo Xuanyu:
Who is he?
Mo Xuanyu is the illegitimate son of the Lanling Jin Sect's leader, Jin Guangshan, and Second Lady Mo. He was once a disciple of the Lanling Jin Sect, but due to a lack of outstanding abilities and a number of circumstances, he was expelled in disgrace. He plays a key role in the plot.
The main plotline surrounding Mo Xuanyu is the ritual to summon Wei Wuxian. Tormented by the cruel treatment he suffered at the hands of his relatives (especially his cousin Mo Ziyuan and his aunt), he takes a desperate step: he sacrifices his body to summon the Yiling Elder (Wei Wuxian) and, with his help, seek revenge on his family. To do this, he draws a magical pentagram with his own blood. Character and personality
Timid and vulnerable, those around him considered him strange and even "crazy," but this was largely a result of bullying and isolation.
Vindictive. Despite his cowardice, he harbors a strong desire to punish those who bullied him.
Lonely. He had virtually no support, and those close to him either turned away or became a source of suffering themselves. Family and Connections
Father: Jin Guangshan.
Mother: Second Lady Mo.
Half-siblings (on father's side): Jin Guangyao, Jin Zixuan, Qin Su.
Enemies in the family: Aunt Madam Mo, Uncle, Cousin Mo Ziyuan - they humiliated and robbed Mo Xuanyu. Abilities
Mo Xuanyu had a relatively low cultivation level: he hadn't formed a golden core and didn't possess any exceptional strength. His "weapons" in the final scene were his knowledge of dark rituals (obtained, in particular, from Jin Guangyao's manuscripts) and his own determination. Differences in different adaptations
In the donghua and especially in the drama (The Untamed: Lord Chenqing), some details of his story were softened or changed due to censorship—for example, his motives and the nature of his relationships with other characters are presented less frankly than in the original novel.
Jin Ling:
Basic information
Courtesy name: Jin Rulan (金如兰).
Order: Lanling Jin.
Age: about 15 years.
Height: 172 cm.
Birthday: November 21st.
Weapon: Suihua sword.
Pet: A dog named Fairy. Family and connections
Jin Ling is the son of Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli, making him the grandson of two influential families: the Jin of Lanling and the Jiang of Yunmeng. He was orphaned at an early age and raised primarily by his maternal uncle, Jiang Cheng. He is also the nephew of Jin Guangyao. Personality and character development
At the beginning of the story, Jin Ling is presented as a hot-tempered, proud, and stubborn youth. Because of this, he has difficulty interacting with his peers. Wei Wuxian even remarks that Jin Ling seems to have "inherited all the faults of his father and uncle, but none of his mother's virtues."
Yet, behind his harsh words and actions lies a vulnerable nature: he grieves the loss of his parents and strives to prove to those around him (especially Jiang Cheng) that he is worthy of being the sect's heir. Gradually, he matures, learning to recognize others' contributions and forgive. For example, he changes his attitude toward Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning, whom he initially hated because of his father's death. In the end, he becomes the head of the Lanling Jin Sect and displays maturity, trying to act in the interests of the people and not put his loved ones at risk. Appearance
Jin Ling has delicate yet distinctive features, and bears a strong resemblance to Jiang Cheng—they could even be mistaken for brothers. He wears the traditional Lanling Jin robes, complete with peonies, and a cinnabar dot between his eyebrows, a characteristic feature of the sect. His donghua features his hair pulled back into a high ponytail. Family and Connections
Jin Ling is the son of Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli, meaning he is the grandson of two influential families: the Jin of Lanling and the Jiang of Yunmeng. He was orphaned at an early age and was raised primarily by his maternal uncle, Jiang Cheng. He is also the nephew of Jin Guangyao.
Qin Su:
Origin and family
Father: Qin Canye, head of the Laoling Qin Sect (ally of Lanling Jin).
Mother: Madam Qin.
Husband: Jin Guangyao. However, because Jin Guangshan (Jin Guangyao's father) was involved in Qin Su's birth, they are effectively half-brother and half-sister.
Son: Jin Rusong. Character and personality
Qin Su is a well-mannered, dignified, and very naive girl. She is often perceived as simple-minded, but there is no malice in her simplicity: she does not judge people by their status or background. For example, she never looked down on Jin Guangyao because of his mother's low status. She is devoted to her husband and loves her son dearly. History and Key Events
Meeting and Marriage. Jin Guangyao saved Qin Su during the Sun Annihilation Campaign, after which she fell deeply in love with him. Despite her father's objections, she sought marriage. They married about a year after Wei Wuxian's death; by this time, Qin Su was already pregnant with Jin Rusong.
A family tragedy. Their son, Jin Rusong, died at an early age. This was a devastating blow for Qin Su. The truth was revealed. Before an important sect meeting, Qin Su received a letter revealing the truth about her parentage and that her marriage to Jin Guangyao was effectively incest. After a conversation with her husband, during which she demanded the truth and slapped him, her condition deteriorated sharply.
Jin Guangyao:
Basic information
Names and titles. His birth name is Meng Yao (孟瑶), his courtesy name is Jin Guangyao, and his title is Lianfangzun (敛芳尊).

Family. He is the illegitimate son of Sect Leader Jin Guangshan and prostitute Meng Shi. Jin Guangyao is Jin Zixuan's half-brother and Jin Ling's uncle. He was married to Qin Su, and they had a son, Jin Rusong. Role in the plot and character
The Path to Power. Jin Guangyao began in humble circumstances and faced disdain due to his birth. He participated in the Sun Annihilation (a major military campaign against the Qishan Wen Sect) and proved himself a cunning and calculating strategist. He was skilled at building connections, manipulating people, and exploiting information to strengthen his influence. He later became the leader of the Lanling Jin Sect. A Contradictory Character. Jin Guangyao is one of the most controversial characters in history. On the one hand, he strove for peace and order, handling administrative matters and attempting to smooth over conflicts. On the other hand, to achieve his goals, he resorted to intrigue, deception, and even murder. His motives are often linked to a desire to gain recognition and overcome the stigma of illegitimacy.
Jin Zixuan:
Who is he?
The heir to the Lanling Jin Sect. He is the only legitimate son of the sect's leader, Jin Guangshan.
Jiang Yanli's husband and Jin Ling's father. His marriage to Jiang Yanli is a major plot point that reveals his character's transformation.
The owner of the Suihua sword. Appearance and status
Appearance. Jin Zixuan was considered very handsome: he ranked third among the most handsome young masters in the cultivator world. He wore the traditional robes of the Lanling Jin Sect, embroidered with a peony ("Peony Sparkling Among the Snow"), and a scarlet mark on his forehead—a sign of his sect membership. His height was
185
185 cm.
Status and Manners: Due to his noble birth, beauty, and intelligence, he was known for his arrogance. Personality and Character Development
Arrogance and naivety. In his youth, he resented his engagement to Jiang Yanli, considering her beneath him. He was quite naive about political intrigue and believed in his father's justice, even though his father was motivated solely by self-interest.
Change and sincerity. Over time, he truly fell in love with Jiang Yanli. However, he was unable to express his feelings well and even hired writers to compose a confession for him.

Madam Jin:
Who is she?
Madam Jin is the wife of Jin Guangshan, the former head of the Lanling Jin Sect, and the mother of Jin Zixuan. She is Jin Ling's grandmother and Jiang Yanli's mother-in-law. Character and personality
A strong and commanding character, Madam Jin is known for her fierce temperament: even her husband, Jin Guangshan, was rumored to be somewhat afraid of her.
Intolerance of her husband's philandering. She despised Jin Guangshan's numerous affairs and vented her anger, including on his illegitimate children, such as Jin Guangyao. She was reserved in her displays of affection. She tried not to show vulnerability and hid her grief under a mask of arrogance. For example, after the death of her son Jin Zixuan, she tried not to upset Jiang Yanli and concealed her own grief.
Fairness and attention to the inner world. Madam Jin valued character over outward appearances. For example, she treated Jiang Yanli with warmth, seeing her kindness and resilience, and repeatedly defended her from attacks by other clan members. Abilities and Skills
A high level of cultivation. Thanks to this, she retained the appearance of a young woman, despite being no longer young.
Swordsmanship. She confidently flew a sword and participated in night hunts, such as the hunt on Baifeng Mountain. Key plot points
Friendship with Yu Ziyuan. Madam Jin had been friends with Yu Ziyuan (the mother of Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli) since childhood. The women even agreed that if their children were of different sexes, they would marry. This is how the engagement of Jin Ziyuan and Jiang Yanli came about.
Relationship with her son. Although Madam Jin often publicly scolded Jin Zixuan for his arrogance and bad manners, she loved him deeply. His death was a heavy blow to her.
A tragic ending. Having lost her son, husband, and daughter-in-law, Madame Jin gradually sank into depression and died several years later.
Jin Guanshan (Part 2):
Fate
Jin Guangshan fell gravely ill toward the end of his life. His son, Jin Guangyao, realizing he would never receive his father's love, orchestrated a brutal reprisal: with the help of Xue Yang and mercenaries, he brought his father to his death. After this, Jin Guangyao took control of the sect.
Jin Guanshan:
Role and status
The head of the Lanling Jin Sect. The sect's seat is the Koi Tower (Golden Carp Tower) in Lanling.
Political ambitions. Jin Guangshan sought dominance in the cultivator world, especially after the fall of the Qishan Wen Sect. He promoted the position of Chief Cultivator (Supreme Cultivator) to consolidate his power. Character and actions
Ambitious and unscrupulous, he was willing to do anything for power: he sheltered criminals, eliminated rivals, and even exploited the death of his own son for political gain.
Debauchery and cynicism. Jin Guangshan had numerous extramarital affairs and illegitimate children. He disdained women, believing their main value was their appearance, not their education. At the same time, he was somewhat intimidated by his hot-tempered wife. Hypocrisy and a thirst for glory. He hosted lavish celebrations (such as the week-long Flower Banquet) to demonstrate the sect's wealth and influence, while simultaneously seeking ways to acquire powerful artifacts like the Stygian Tiger Seal. Family and Relationships
Madam Jin is the wife; their relationship was strained due to Jin Guangshan's behavior.
Jin Zixuan, the only legitimate son and heir, was the husband of Jiang Yanli; his death was used by Jin Guangshan for political maneuvering.
Jin Guangyao (Meng Yao) is an illegitimate son. Initially, Jin Guangshan refused to acknowledge him, later accepted him into the sect, but disliked him and used him as a tool. It was Jin Guangyao who ultimately orchestrated his father's death.
Other children include Mo Xuanyu and Qin Su. Appearance
Jin Guangshan wore the ceremonial robes of the Lanling Jin Sect, adorned with peonies, with a scarlet mark on his forehead. He was described as having a square face; even in old age, thanks to his cultivation practices, he looked comparatively youthful.
Information about the Lanling Jin Clan (Part 3):
Differences in leaders' approaches
The policies and "rules" varied depending on the chapter:
Under Jin Guangshan, the emphasis was on power and expansion of influence, including through questionable methods.
Under Jin Guangyao, elements of social responsibility (watchtowers, aid to the poor) were added, although with ambiguous motives.
Under Jin Ling, the emphasis shifted to genuine protection of the people and a more restrained demeanor, without the previous displays of luxury.
Information about the Lanling Jin Clan (Part 2):
Features and reputation
The clan actively used money as a tool of influence: hiring powerful spellcasters, funding projects, and buying up territories.
In the past, he did not hesitate to collaborate with dark practitioners (for example, with Xue Yang), which damaged the reputation of the order.
The policies of Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao caused many conflicts with other sects.
Under Jin Ling, the clan became more restrained and focused on truly protecting the people. What replaced the rules?
Relying on wealth and influence. The clan actively used its resources to strengthen its position: hiring powerful cultivators, funding projects, and buying up territories. This was an unspoken principle of the sect's policy under Jin Guangshan.
Participation in watchtowers. Under Jin Guangyao, this became an important duty: disciples from various clans manned the towers and reported the appearance of evil spirits. If people couldn't afford the assistance, Lanling Jin covered the costs. A display of status. Luxury and pomp were part of the sect's image: expensive attire embroidered with peony, formal receptions, and large-scale events. This also functioned as an unspoken rule—the clan must appear powerful and wealthy. Symbolic phrases instead of a motto.
"To illuminate the world with a bright red light." This phrase refers to the cinnabar dot between the eyebrows of the order's adepts. It symbolizes openness to wisdom and the clan's intention to play a leading role in the world of cultivators.
Peony symbolism. The snow-white peony cultivar "Shine Among the Snows" emphasized the idea of superiority: the peony, as the "king of flowers," implied that Lanling Jin should rule over other sects.
Information about the Lanling Jin Clan:
Basic information
Title: Lanling Jin (兰陵金氏, Lánlíng Jīn Shì).
Residence: Koi Tower (or Golden Carp Tower) in Lanling.
Symbol: snow-white peony of the ‘Shine among the Snows’ variety.
The distinctive mark of the adepts: a cinnabar dot between the eyebrows - it symbolizes openness to wisdom and the intention to “illuminate the world with bright red light.”
Clothing style: luxurious outfits with peony embroidery; in visual adaptations, a combination of white and gold or yellow. History and role in the world of spellcasters
The Lanling Jin Sect is known primarily for its immense wealth and pursuit of political dominance. After the fall of the Qishan Wen Sect, the clan actively consolidated its influence and sought to become the leader of the cultivation world.
A key project of the sect was its network of watchtowers. Under Jin Guangyao, 1,200 towers were built to protect ordinary people from evil spirits. Disciples from various clans manned the towers and reported the appearance of dark entities. If people were unable to pay cultivators for their assistance, Lanling Jin covered the costs. Key clan leaders
Jin Guangshan, the previous leader, aspired to the position of Supreme Cultivator, exploited the clan's resources to increase his power, and had a controversial reputation due to his numerous extramarital affairs.
Jin Guangyao, Jin Guangshan's son, became the first Chief Cultivator. He attempted to right the clan's wrongs, but became involved in serious crimes and was killed by Lan Xichen.
Jin Ling (Jin Rulan) is the current leader, the son of Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli. He became leader at a young age, assisted by Jiang Cheng. Unlike his grandfather, Jin Ling prioritizes protecting ordinary people. Notable clan members
Jin Zixuan - the official heir to the throne under Jin Guangshan, husband of Jiang Yanli, father of Jin Ling; died before the main events.
Mo Xuanyu is the illegitimate son of Jin Guangshan and was exiled from the clan.
Qin Su is Jin Guangyao's wife.
Jin Zixun is a relative of Jin Guangshan.
Lan Jingyi:
Who is he?
Lan Jingyi is a junior disciple of the Gusu Lan Sect, one of the young cultivators who participate in the investigation of various mystical incidents. A close friend of Lan Sizhui, he and other young men (including Jin Ling and Ouyang Zizhen) often find themselves at the center of events.
Lan Jingyi has a bright and lively temperament:
Straightforward and emotional, he doesn't hide his feelings, says what he thinks, and can be blunt.
Carefree but honest. He tends to act on impulse rather than cold calculation, but he also has a strong sense of justice.
Hot-tempered, but not vindictive. Can get angry quickly, but calms down just as quickly.
He's afraid of ghosts, though he tries not to show it. Despite being from the strict Gusu Lan sect, which values restraint, Lan Jingyi doesn't always follow the rules: for example, he might secretly drink alcohol or break the ban on talking. Appearance and details
Wears the traditional white robes of the Gusu Lan Sect.
On the forehead is a ribbon with a pattern of clouds, which indicates belonging to the main branch of the clan.
Height: 168 cm. Abilities and equipment
As a disciple of the sect, Lan Jingyi has mastered the basic skills of a cultivator:
knows how to handle a sword;
uses ritual objects like a spirit-attracting flag and a compass of evil winds to search for evil spirits and investigate anomalies. Role in the plot
He takes part in many key episodes together with younger students:
in the investigation in the village of Mo;
on Mount Dafan;
in the second siege of the mounds and other events.
Lan Jingyi often acts as the emotional voice of young students: he is the first to express indignation, fear, or excitement, and through him one can clearly see how young cultivators react to the dangers and mysteries of the world.
Lan Sizhui (Part 2):
Abilities and skills
Gusu Lan Sect's swordsmanship is at a good level, according to Lan Wangji.
Knows how to work with magical items: uses the "Flag that attracts spirits", "Compass of Evil", and talismans.
Able to summon spirits and communicate with them (a spirit cannot lie, although it is not always ready to answer difficult questions).
Lan Sizhui:
Origin and history
His real name at birth is Wen Yuan (温苑). He is the last blood descendant of the destroyed Qishan Wen Sect.
As a child, he experienced a tragedy during the siege of Mount Luanzang: he miraculously escaped by hiding in a hollow tree, but contracted a fever and lost all memories of the past.
He was found by Lan Wangji, taken into the Gusu Lan Sect, and given a new name—first Lan Yuan (蓝愿), and later the courtesy name Lan Sizhui. The name Sizhui (思追) means "to remember and long for," a reference to Lan Wangji's feelings for Wei Wuxian. Character and role in the plot
Well-mannered, sensible, and observant, he often acts as an unspoken leader among the order's younger disciples. For example, he led a group of young adepts during an investigation in the village of Mo.
He's not inclined to divide the world into black and white. He's capable of questioning conventional wisdom—for example, earlier than others, he began to suspect that Wei Wuxian (as Mo Xuanyu) wasn't quite as he was portrayed.
Kindhearted and responsible. He feels guilty about the sacrifices associated with the events he participated in. However, he is not without youthful impetuosity: he can act boldly and even recklessly if he believes it is right. Appearance and Attributes
The young man has a refined, noble appearance and gives the impression of being a stately and dignified person.
He wears the traditional white robes of the Gusu Lan Sect and a forehead ribbon embroidered with floating clouds, a sign of belonging to the Lan clan.
Height - 172 cm, birthday - January 12.
Connections with other characters
Lan Wangji is his guardian and main role model.
Wei Wuxian is effectively a second guardian; they develop a warm, almost father-son relationship, full of teasing and care.
Wen Ning and Wen Qing are blood relatives (uncle and aunt).
He is part of a group of young heroes along with Jin Ling, Lan Jingyi and others.
Lan Qiren (Part 2):
Vivid episodes and facts
In his youth, Lan Qiren was particularly stubborn and principled. He once nearly killed Wei Changze and Jiang Fengmian during a Night Hunt, acting according to what he believed was the rules. He refused to apologize, and then Wei Wuxian's mother, Cangse Sanren, jokingly cut off his goatee.
He oversaw the training of a group of young disciples, including Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang, and Jin Zixuan. Wei Wuxian was constantly disruptive, regularly angering his teacher. During the siege of Mount Luanzang, Lan Qiren led a detachment of the Gusu Lan Sect. At a critical moment, he sacrificed his own blood to hold back the undead and give the disciples a chance to retreat. Appearance
Lan Qiren is a tall, lean man with an upright posture. He once sported a long black goatee (which was later cut off by Cangse Sanren). In the animated and screen adaptations, his appearance emphasizes austerity: neat hairstyle, traditional sect attire, and reserved manners.
Lan Qiren:
Who is he?
Lan Qiren is the elder of the Gusu Lan Sect, a renowned teacher and mentor known for his strictness and meticulousness. He practically single-handedly ruled the sect while his older brother, the leader of the Qinghengjun Sect, remained in secluded meditation. Role and significance in the plot
Mentor and educator. Lan Qiren is renowned for transforming the most disobedient and hopeless students into well-behaved young men, well-versed in etiquette and the sect's rules. Children from the most influential clans sought him out.
Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji's uncle. He personally raised his nephews (called the "Two Jades of the Gusu Lan Sect") and sought to protect them from the mistakes he believed their parents had made. A stickler for strict rules, he is extremely conservative, firmly upholding the sect's values and charter, and intolerant of deviations from the norm—including criticizing Wei Wuxian's ideas about using the "dark path" to combat evil. Personality and Traits
Strict and meticulous. His teaching methods are harsh, and discipline in the Cloud Recesses is maintained by his authority.
A sense of duty. For him, the rules and honor of the order are more important than personal preferences.
Hidden care. Despite his outward sternness, he sincerely loves his nephews and cares for his students, striving to give them a proper upbringing.
Conservatism. It is suspicious of anything that goes beyond tradition and actively suppresses any violation of the rules.
Lan Wangji's History (brief):
Brief History Childhood: Son of the Qingheng-jun Sect Leader and Madam Lan. Due to the tragic circumstances of his parents' marriage, he grew up in strict isolation and was raised by his uncle, Lan Qiren. He saw his mother once a month, and after her early death, he continued to visit the door of her empty house for years.
Youth and meeting Wei Ying: He grew up cold, unsociable, and obsessed with rules. While training in the Cloud Recesses, he met his complete opposite—the loud and rule-breaking Wei Wuxian, with whom he eventually fell deeply and secretly in love.
Tragedy and the Annihilation of the Sun: He survived the burning of his home by the Wen Clan, a leg wound, and the death of his father. He fought in the war, but later tried unsuccessfully to dissuade Wei Wuxian from the dangerous path of darkness. When the entire world turned its back on the Yiling Elder, Lan Zhan turned against his own clan to protect him, for which he was cruelly punished with a whip and locked in isolation for three years.
Waiting and Resurrection: After hearing the news of Wei Ying's death, he spent 13 years raising the little boy Wen Yuan (Lan Sizhui) he had saved, and continuously played the melody of "Inquiry" on the guqin, trying to summon the soul of the deceased.
Finale: Thirteen years later, Wei Wuxian is resurrected in Mo Xuanyu's body. Lan Zhan immediately recognizes him from the melody he plays on his flute. This time, he never lets him go, helps clear his name of false accusations, confesses his feelings, and becomes his legal companion on the path of cultivation.
Lan Zhan (Lan Wangji, Hanguang-jun)
Who is Lan Wangji?
Name and Title: His real name is Lan Zhan (Lan Wangji), and Hanguang-jun (meaning "light bearer") is his honorary title.
Personality: A very strict, honest, quiet, and polite person. He always follows the rules of his clan.
Connection with Wei Wuxian: He was the only one who openly stood up for Wei Wuxian in the past and waited for him for thirteen years after his death.
Weapons and abilities:
Sword: Bichen is his trusty blade.
Guqin: A tool named "Wangji" that he uses in battle for spells.
Strength: He is one of the most powerful and respected martial artists and magicians of his time.
Born on January 23 (Aquarius), he is the epitome of male beauty and nobility in Gusu Lan's terms. Thanks to his high level of cultivation, his body never ages, so he always appears like a flawless 20-22-year-old, even though his actual age is around 35-36.
Appearance:
Face and Eyes: Incredibly handsome, he ranks second among the best young gentlemen of his generation. He has very fair skin, long eyelashes, and rare, translucent-light eyes resembling jade (colored glass).
Hair and Clothing: He wears long black hair, partly pulled back into a neat hairstyle. He always dresses in the immaculate white, tastefully tailored robes of the Gusu Lan Sect.
Forehead ribbon: The main attribute is a white ribbon with a pattern of floating clouds on the forehead, symbolizing self-restraint. Only parents, children, or a spouse are allowed to touch it.
Distinguishing marks: 33 scars from a disciplinary whip, received for defending Wei Wuxian, are hidden on his back. On his chest, just below his collarbone, is the Wen clan brand scar, which he branded himself while drunk and grieving for his lost loved one.
Height: 188 cm.
Lan Xichen/Zewu-jun:
Who is he?
The leader of the Gusu Lan Sect. His title is Zewu-jun ("one who bears duty and moral obligation").

He looks like his brother, but he has a softer look and smiles more often.
Like all Lan clan members, he quickly becomes intoxicated even from small amounts of alcohol. Weapons and abilities
Wields the sword Shoyue (New Moon).
Lebin plays the flute ("Breaking the Ice").
Gusu Lan Clan Rules:
Basic rules and principles
A strict daily routine. *All clan members rise promptly at 5 a.m. (Mao hour) and go to bed promptly at 9 p.m. (Hai hour). This is one of the most well-known and frequently cited rules.
Copying the rules manually. The offender must copy all the rules—it's both a punishment and a way to remember them.
Handstand. Sometimes copying the rules requires doing it while standing on your hands.
Board strikes. Serious violations may result in strikes with a special board.
Information about the Gusu Lan clan (part 2):
Life. In the Cloud Recesses, there's a cold spring where male cultivators bathe. It was believed to calm the "restless heart" and clear the mind of negative thoughts. The food in the residence is strictly vegetarian and has a medicinal taste. Clan banquets, according to Wei Wuxian, are more solemn than funerals.
External Facilities. The clan had additional accommodations for followers during night hunts, such as the elegant Bamboo Cottage. Historical Events
Shortly before the Sun Annihilation Campaign, the Qishan Wen Clan forced Gusu Lan to burn down the Cloud Recesses. Many disciples were killed, the clan leader Qingheng-jun was seriously wounded, Lan Wangji was injured, and Lan Xichen went missing. The residence was later restored to its former glory, thanks to the assistance of Jin Guangyao.
Information about the Gusu Lan clan:
History and foundation
The clan was founded by Lan An. In his youth, he became a renowned monk, and at around twenty years old, he took the surname "Lan" (the second character in the word "celan," which goes back to the Chinese name for a Buddhist monastery—伽藍, samghārāma) and began the secular life of a cultivator, becoming interested in music. In Gusu, he met a woman who became his companion on the path of self-improvement, and thus the clan was born. After the death of his wife, Lan An returned to the temple and completed his journey. Residence
The clan's main residence is the Cloud Recesses (Yunshen Buzhi Chu, 云深不知处). It is located in the secluded mountains near the city of Gusu. The area is constantly shrouded in fog, giving the impression of an island floating in the clouds. Rules and the Wall of Obedience
At the entrance to the Cloud Recesses stands the Wall of Obedience (also known as the Wall of Discipline). The clan's rules are inscribed on it. When Wei Wuxian studied there as a teenager, there were around three thousand rules. By the time of his rebirth in the story, their number had exceeded four thousand—about a thousand were added later. Among the prohibitions: debauchery, killing living creatures, night walks, noise, fast walking, climbing trees, slouching, skipping classes, walking barefoot, blackmail, gambling, playing with fire, stealing, swearing, playing in water, whistling, excessive eating and drinking, hugging, running and jumping, careless handling of the forehead ribbon, and much more. There are also more mundane restrictions: for example, prohibiting sitting in an improper position, laughing without reason, being a picky eater. Punishments followed for violations: adherents were forced to rewrite the rules by hand; for serious offenses, they could be beaten with a board; and later, an option was added: standing on your hands while rewriting.
Key places in Gusu Lan:
Cloud Recesses (云深不知处, Yunshen buzhi chu) is the sect's main and, effectively, only official residence. It is located on a remote mountain outside the city of Gusu (the sect doesn't control the city itself, it's merely a neighbor). The area is shrouded in fog, making the settlement appear to float in the clouds. The residence's borders are protected by a barrier erected by the former clan leaders. Within, there are various buildings, gardens with pavilions by the water. Another important detail: carved into the cliff at the foot of the mountain is the Wall of Obedience (sometimes called the Wall of Discipline)—it inscribes the sect's rules. Initially, there were over three thousand of them, but later, including after Wei Wuxian's arrival, the list grew, and the number exceeded four thousand.
The city of Caiyi (also known as the "water city" near Biling Lake). But it's important to be clear: Caiyi doesn't belong to the Gusu Lan Sect. It's a separate settlement, simply geographically close to the residence.
Jiang Fenmian (part 2):
Relationships with key characters
With Yu Ziyuan. Their marriage was loveless and fraught with tension: the domineering and hot-tempered Yu Ziyuan clashed constantly with the gentle and accommodating Jiang Fengmian. Their differences were particularly acute over child rearing and their relationship with Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian treated his adopted son with great warmth and supported his free-spirited nature. It was Jiang Fengmian who named Wei Wuxian's sword "Whatever the Facts" in response to Wei Wuxian's words, "Call it whatever you want."
With Jiang Cheng. The relationship was complicated: due to his father's reserve, Jiang Cheng felt neglected and jealous of Wei Wuxian, even though Jiang Fengmian genuinely cared for him. Abilities and role in the plot
Combat Skills. As the sect leader, Jiang Fengmian was an accomplished cultivator and mastered the sword techniques characteristic of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect.
A tragic death. He died during the attack on Lotus Pier, a victim of political intrigue and inter-order feuds. His death became a turning point for many of history's heroes.
Jiang Fenmian:
Basic information
Role and status: Former head of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect, resided in Lotus Pier. Deceased at the time of the main events of the story.
Family. Husband of Yu Ziyuan, father of Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng (Jiang Wanyin), father-in-law of Jin Zixuan, grandfather of Jin Ling. He took Wei Wuxian under his wing, raising him as his own son. Character and personality
Gentleness and diplomacy. Jiang Fengmian is a polite, calm, and reserved man, inclined to avoid conflict and smooth over rough edges. Because of this, he often caved to pressure from influential clans (such as the Meishan Yu) and his domineering wife.
Compassion and kindness. He showed great generosity of spirit when he took in the orphaned Wei Wuxian, the son of his close friend Wei Changze. He treated him warmly and gave him a home and a family. Passivity in personal relationships. He often maintained a distanced demeanor within the family: rarely showing emotion and paying little attention to his son's upbringing, which led to Jiang Cheng developing feelings of insecurity and resentment. This gave rise to rumors that he loved Wei Wuxian more than his own son (though in reality, he simply lacked the ability to express his feelings).
Caring for his loved ones. Despite his outward aloofness, he genuinely cared for his family's happiness. For example, he insisted on breaking off Jiang Yanli's daughter's engagement to Jin Zixuan when he realized he didn't reciprocate her feelings—he wanted to spare her from suffering.
Yu Ziyuan/Mrs. Yu:
Basic information
Nicknames: She is known as "Violet Spider" and "Madame Yu."
Origin and family. She hails from the renowned Meishan Yu Sect, where she was known as the Third Lady Yu. Yu Ziyuan married Jiang Fengmian, the leader of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect. She is the mother of Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng (Jiang Wanyin), and the grandmother of Jin Ling.
Status: She's dead according to the plot. Character and personality
Sternness and authority. Yu Ziyuan was a formidable and strong-willed woman, feared and respected. She had a sharp temperament and could be cold and even cruel, especially in matters of discipline.
A complicated relationship with her husband. Her marriage to Jiang Fengmian was not based on love, and there was much tension between the couple. The situation became especially tense after Jiang Fengmian took Wei Wuxian under his wing, which Yu Ziyuan perceived as neglect of their biological son, Jiang Cheng. A mother's love. Despite her strictness, she was fiercely protective of her children. At a critical moment, she sacrificed herself to give Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian a chance to escape. Abilities and weapons
Combat skills. Yu Ziyuan was a powerful cultivator and a skilled swordswoman.
Zidian. She wielded a powerful spiritual artifact, the Zidian Whip Ring (Purple Lightning), which she later passed on to her son, Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Yanli:
Who is she?
The eldest daughter of Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan, the elder sister of Jiang Cheng, and the adopted elder sister (shijie) of Wei Wuxian.
Jin Zixuan's wife and Jin Ling's mother.
Belongs to the Yunmeng Jiang clan by birth, and is associated with the Lanling Jin clan by marriage. Character and traits
Gentle and polite, yet fearlessly protective of her loved ones. For example, she doesn't tolerate insults directed at Wei Wuxian and is capable of reasoning with him even in moments of extreme despair.
She loves to cook and often does it for her brothers and other loved ones - food becomes a way for her to show care.
She has a low level of cultivation (combat and spiritual abilities), but she still tries to help in any way she can. Important plot points
She was engaged to Jin Zixuan as a child at the behest of her parents. Their relationship was initially rocky, but over time, a genuine affection developed between them.
She gave birth to a son, Jin Ling (polite name - Rulan).
She sacrificed her life to save Wei Wuxian: she pushed him aside and took the sword strike herself. Her death became a turning point in the story and greatly influenced Wei Wuxian's future actions.
Jiang Cheng:
Basic information
Role: The leader of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect, one of the leaders of the cultivation world.
Family and Connections. Son of Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan, brother of Jiang Yanli, adoptive brother (shidi) of Wei Wuxian, uncle of Jin Ling. Abilities and Equipment
Weapons: The Sandu (Three Poisons) Sword and the Zidian (Purple Lightning) Relic Ring, which can transform into a whip that shoots purple lightning.
Special Skills: Thanks to the transplanted golden core, Jiang Cheng possesses great strength; Zidian can also separate the soul from the body if it is possessed by an evil spirit. Appearance
In his donghua, Jiang Cheng has a neat hairstyle with loose strands and side braids, secured with a purple ribbon. He has sharp yet graceful features and a piercing gaze. He is 185 cm tall and was born on November 5th. Personality and History
Jiang Cheng is a hot-tempered, proud, and blunt man, but beneath this stern exterior lies a deep affection for his family and a willingness to protect them. His personality was profoundly shaped by the difficult relationship within his family: his parents often compared him to Wei Wuxian, which fostered feelings of inferiority and resentment. The key turning point in his fate was the fall of Lotus Pier (the seat of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect) and the loss of his own "golden core" (the source of a cultivator's spiritual power). Wei Wuxian later sacrificed his core to save Jiang Cheng and transfer his power to him. This simultaneously saved Jiang Cheng as a cultivator and further complicated their relationship, as it forced Wei Wuxian down the "dark path."
Over time, Jiang Cheng becomes one of the main opponents of the dark path practices and leads the siege of Mount Luanzang, where Wei Wuxian is hiding.
Wei Wuxian (Part 2)
Reincarnation: Years after his death, his soul was summoned into Mo Xuanyu's body through a voluntary body sacrifice ritual Wei Wuxian himself had invented. However, Mo Xuanyu's body was significantly weaker, and Wei Wuxian himself had become 6 centimeters shorter. In his original body, he was considered very attractive—ranked fourth among the best young masters of his generation. He had steel-gray eyes and long black hair. In his youth, he wore the purple robes of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect, tying his hair in a high ponytail with a red ribbon. After turning to the Dark Path, he changed his wardrobe to black and red, and began wearing only a small portion of his hair at the back of his head with a ribbon.
His signature instrument was the Chenqing (former feelings) flute, adorned with a blood-red tassel and jade embellishment. He was energetic, mischievous, easygoing, charming, and cheerful. He loved to tease others and flirt. Training: In the Gusu Sect, Lan met Lan Wangji. Biography
Birthday: October 31st. Death: Died during the siege of Mount Luanzang thirteen years before the main events of the novel.
Wei Wuxian/Ying
Family: The only son of Wei Changze (father) and Canse Sanren (mother). After his parents' deaths, he lived on the streets as a child until he was taken into the Yunmeng Sect by Jiang Fengmian, the sect leader and a friend of his parents.
Relationship
He was the adopted son of Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan.
Became Lan Wangji's husband.
Other characters also played an important role in his life: shidi Jiang Cheng, shijie Jiang Yanli, and nephew Jin Ling.
He was also a talented artist and an experienced archer.
Developed the Flag, which attracts spirits, and the Compass of Evil (detects creatures with dark energy).
Mastered the "Paper Metamorphosis" technique, which allowed him to attach his soul to a piece of paper for espionage.
Abilities and inventions
Invented the Path of Darkness (using dark energy to help the adept, not suppress him).
He created the Stygian Tiger Seal, a weapon that could summon an army of corpses. He was stubborn and uncompromising, and could be cruel to those he hated. He possessed a strong sense of justice, but this could also lead to mercilessness towards his enemies. Interesting fact: due to psychological trauma suffered in childhood (he had to fight stray dogs for food when he lived on the streets), Wei Wuxian was deathly afraid of dogs. He displayed a spirit of self-sacrifice: for example, he transplanted his Golden Core into Jiang Cheng after Jiang Cheng's own was burned out. At the same time, he cared deeply for those he loved. He was energetic, mischievous, easygoing, charming, and cheerful. He loved to tease others and flirt. He had steel-gray eyes and long black hair. In his youth, he wore the purple robes of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect, tying his hair in a high ponytail with a red ribbon. After turning to the Dark Path, he changed his wardrobe to black and red and began to tie only a small part of his hair at the back of his head with a ribbon.

Life around the Wharf is bustling: locals often set up shop in front of the entrance, selling lotus seeds, water chestnuts, and baked goods. Children from neighboring houses often sneak onto the training grounds to spy on the order's adepts. In other words, a whole residential and commercial zone has developed around the Wharf, not separate clan villages, but a settlement adjacent to the residence.
There is a village called Sanwei, which is described as a group of small islands on a lake, and Yunmeng Jiang is responsible for it.
