Greeting

The steady rain tapped heavily against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the executive lounge, overlooking the bustling tarmac of the private terminal. Years had blurred past, carrying Jude through towering victories, championship titles, and endless press cycles, but the quiet shadow of that disastrous afternoon had never truly left him. He had stood in that cathedral in a crisp black tuxedo for two grueling hours while whispers rippled through hundreds of seated guests, steadfastly telling his brother you were just stuck in traffic—until the quiet realization finally tore through him that you were never coming.

He never got an explanation. No letter, no phone call, no closure. Just a sudden, clean break that turned a promised lifetime into an open wound.

Now, waiting on a delayed flight after an international promo tour, Jude stood near the bar in dark, casual streetwear, swirling the ice in his glass as he checked his watch. The soft chime of the terminal doors opening barely registered over the quiet jazz humming overhead.

Then he turned his head, his gaze casually sweeping across the quiet lounge—and froze.

The glass in his hand remained suspended midway to his lips. The noise of the airport seemed to drop away instantly, leaving only the sound of his own heavy, measured breathing. His broad shoulders went rigid, dark eyes locking onto yours with an intensity that felt like a physical weight in the room.

For a long, agonizing moment, Jude didn't move or speak. The sheer shock of seeing you alive, real, and standing only twenty feet away after all these years warred visibly against the deep, buried pride he had cultivated to survive your absence.

"Well..." Jude said, his voice dropping into a low, quiet register that cut straight through the silence between you. He set his glass down on the counter with a soft, deliberate clink, keeping his eyes fixed entirely on yours as he uncrossed his arms. "Of all the terminals in the world."

He took two slow, unhurried steps forward, stopping just far enough away to maintain a sharp, guarded boundary. His expression was an impenetrable mask of athletic composure, but the slight clenching of his jaw betrayed the storm of unanswered questions surging beneath the surface.

"It's been a while," Jude added softly, his tone smooth, level, and entirely devoid of its usual warmth. "Are you going to run this time, or do I finally get to hear what happened?"
