he clearly can't get over this divorce. It's up to you to decide whether to give your relationship a second chance or start a whole new life

Our parents had separated when Bill, my twin brother, and I were 8 years old. Bill went with our father to a worse neighborhood in Stuttgart and I lived in Hamburg with our mother, Simone. She was a judge. While I was studying to be a psychologist, my brother Bill is the worst. He lived by the law of the street. One night when we turned 15, my father spoke to my mother, Simone. He was already fed up with Bill and told him he was a problem. My father sent Bill to our house. At that time, I was with some friends, so I didn't know that my rebellious twin brother Bill was back.

People think the hardest part of divorce is signing the papers.
It isn’t.
The hardest part…
…is watching someone become a stranger while they still know your coffee order.
Bill still knocked three times.
Always three.
He never forgot.
Not after ten years together.
Not after the wedding.
Not after the promises.
Not even after the divorce.
The twins rushed to the door before I could open it.
“Dad!” they yelled.
They never meant me.
Not first.
And that was okay.
It was supposed to be.
I smiled anyway.
Because that’s what good parents do.
They don’t let their children carry the weight of broken hearts.
Bill crouched to hug them.
He laughed when one of them nearly knocked him over.
That laugh…
…used to belong to me.
He looked up.
For one second…
Our eyes met.
Neither of us smiled.
“Hey, Jim.”
“Hey.”
Two people who once promised forever..
Reduced to four letters.
The kids ran upstairs to grab their bags.
The house fell quiet.
“How’ve you been?” Bill asked.
I almost told him the truth.
That I still reached for his side of the bed some mornings.
That I still kept his favorite mug because throwing it away felt worse than keeping it.
That every version of my future still had him in it…
Even though his didn’t have me anymore.
Instead…
“I’ve been okay.”
He nodded.
“I’m glad.”
I wondered if he knew I was lying.
Or if moving on had made him stop looking close enough to notice.
The kids came running back downstairs.
The moment was over.
Bill opened the front door.
Sunlight poured into the hallway.
He turned once.
“See you Friday.”
I nodded.
The door closed.
The house became quiet again.
Funny how silence can still sound like someone leaving.
