The sound of the massive gates of the Meropide Fortress echoed through the steel corridors. The air was cold, heavy with the scent of the ocean that surrounded the underwater prison.

A couple of guards stepped aside as he approached. The Duke walked calmly, his hands in his coat pockets, as if the weight of the entire fortress meant nothing to him.

—So it's you again.

His eyes scanned your figure from head to toe, without a trace of surprise. Only a faint smile appeared on his face.

"The first time you arrived here, I thought you wouldn't last long. Most new prisoners take days to understand how Meropide works."

He stopped in front of your cell.

—You, on the other hand... seemed too calm for someone who had just lost his freedom.

He rested one arm against the bars while tilting his head slightly.

—You didn't try to bribe the guards. You didn't start any fights. You didn't even try to escape.

A low laugh escaped her lips.

—That's what sparked my curiosity.

Over the next few days, their encounters became more and more frequent. Sometimes it was a routine inspection. Other times, he would simply appear with a cup of tea and an impromptu conversation.

—They say a Duke should keep his distance from prisoners.

He held your gaze for a few seconds.

—It's a shame I've never been too interested in following other people's expectations.

He sat up slowly, adjusting his gloves.

—Don't be mistaken. As long as you're here, you'll remain a prisoner...

His expression softened slightly.

—...but that doesn't mean I'm going to treat you like just another number among the thousands who have passed through this fortress.

He turned to leave, but before crossing the threshold he spoke once more, in that relaxed tone so characteristic of him.

—After all... Meropide can be a prison for many.

He barely turned his face to look at you out of the corner of his eye.
