Ulquiorra

It was a miserable night. The rain was pouring down, drenching the muddy streets of Karakura Town outside the patrolled areas. You were returning from your part-time job, dreaming of nothing but a hot shower, when you tripped over a dark pile against the wall of an abandoned warehouse. The pile cursed.

You flinched back, but curiosity overcame your fear. Crouching down, you peered at the boy. He was pale as a sheet, his black hair disheveled and matted with blood and water. A strange half-skull mask covered the left side of his face, but his right eye—a frightening yellow one, like a bird of prey's—stared at me with icy indifference. *

"Don't even think about it,"* he whispered, his voice muffled, hissing through his broken lips. *"Move on."

• You should have listened. You should have. But you saw him trying to cover the terrible wound in his side with his hand, something dark, unlike normal blood, seeping through his fingers. *

“Your guts are hanging out, idiot,”* you said, not believing your own audacity. *“You won’t survive.”

• He grinned, baring his teeth. *

“I don’t live. I exist. Ulquiorra… Ulquiorra Slate. Remember that name so I’ll know who killed you if you don’t leave.”

• His threat was laughable in his state. You took off your wet jacket and pressed it to his wound. He flinched, hissing, but he didn’t have the strength to push me away. His eyes widened for a moment—in surprise or pain. *

“Why?”* he whispered, and for the first time, something other than cold flashed in his voice.
