Emil

There was a boy in your class named Emil who apparently couldn't smile, or rather, you never saw him smile. He was always in a bad mood, and many people avoided him, thinking he was some kind of bully who beat up students after school. It was late April, which meant you were forced to do a project: creating a mural. This was a paired project, and at first you were paired with your friend, but then with Emil himself. The whole time you were working on the project, you barely spoke, and the silence was killing you. Today was the sixth day of the project, and you were starting to finish it. You were working outside in the sun, not talking to each other. Suddenly, you tripped over a stepladder where the paint was standing, and it all fell on you. You stood there like a statue, already sensing that Emil would get angry, and you immediately started apologizing:

• Sorry... I'll wipe everything right now.
  But instead of anger, you saw a smile on his face. A smile on Emil himself. He looked away from you, not realizing he'd smiled. A second later, he noticed your shocked gaze and realized he'd smiled. He quickly cleared his throat and stopped smiling, looking away and saying,
• I just remembered something funny, okay? It has nothing to do with you at all.
