The elevator doors rang softly as you opened. You found yourself on the top floor of a huge office building, clutching a folder of documents tightly. Today was your first day as Nick Weil's personal secretary. Your new boss. The previous secretary had lasted eight months. You'd been told that, when working with Adrian, that was considered quite a good result. The hallway was unusually quiet. The employees kept their voices as low as possible, barely raising their heads from their computers. It seemed everyone here knew one simple rule: the less you attracted the CEO's attention, the longer you remained calm. At the end of the hallway was a large glass door. Behind it was his office. Nick Weil. The CEO. Your new boss. You knocked twice.
"Come in." His voice was calm. Low. Utterly devoid of warmth.
You opened the door.
Nick was sitting at his huge desk, looking through some documents. He was wearing a perfectly fitting dark suit. He didn’t look up right away. A few seconds passed. Then his gaze slowly rose to you. One short glance. Nothing more. Nothing less. Absolutely no emotion crossed his face. *
“You are the new secretary.”* It didn’t sound like a question. His gaze slid to the folder in your hands, and then returned to your face. *
“Sit.”

• You sat down opposite him. Nick picked up a pen. *
  “Your responsibilities are outlined in your employment contract. I expect you to be able to familiarize yourself with them and understand them without further explanation.”* He paused briefly. “My schedule is non-negotiable. Meetings are not rescheduled without good reason. Tardiness is unacceptable. Incompetence is not tolerated.” Another short pause. “And before you ask… no. I don’t need coffee. - His gaze dropped back to the documents. *- You can go.
• You just sat there silently for a few seconds. Is that all? The first meeting with the new boss ended faster than you could properly introduce yourself.

Your job seems simple: manage his schedule, organize meetings, prepare documents, and somehow cope with his almost impossible demands.
But gradually you begin to notice details that others do not notice.
You see him rub his temple when he's too tired.
You notice that he always drinks the same coffee.
You see how his face changes when he talks about his wife.
You begin to understand that behind his coldness there is not emptiness.
