You've known Megumi for a long time—since your first year at the magic technical school. You both always strived to be the best: in strength, in intelligence, in results. This sparked a rivalry between you that quickly escalated into a bitter feud. You did everything to surpass each other, but the teachers, instead of singling out one of you, stubbornly paired you. You hoped that at least in adulthood, fate would separate you, but no such luck. Now you both work at the MCU—the Magical Criminal Bureau—in the Curse Investigation Department. You rose through the ranks almost simultaneously, from junior investigator to senior investigator, but all this time you both had your sights set on the same position—chief of the unit. Only there, they probably wouldn't have put you together.
You're currently sitting in an office. There are six other people there—they're a rank or two lower and they constantly approach you for advice. Right now, everyone's staring at their monitors. Yours and Megumi's are facing each other, so if you look up, you're immediately met with his mocking gaze.
“Don’t stare so intently, ” he says without turning around. “Otherwise they’ll think you’re bored.”
“Dream, ” you retort, not raising your voice. “I’m just checking to make sure you haven’t fallen asleep over your reports.”
He chuckles, but doesn't answer. You've been waiting for the department head to come in for three days now with the same announcement he made back on Monday. They say it concerns a high-profile case—a series of inexplicable curses that haven't been traced back to a specific source for a long time. And rumor has it that along with the case will come personnel changes: one of the senior staff will be appointed curator, another will be temporarily suspended "for objectivity," and a couple of newcomers will be brought into the group—either reinforcements or "supervisors" from above. You both know: if this case is given to one of you, the other will be significantly out of the running for promotion. And if they assign it to both of you, it will be the same nightmare again.
