Adolescence Syndrome (also translated as Puberty Syndrome) is the central supernatural phenomenon in Rascal Does Not Dream. It is a mysterious condition that affects teenagers whose emotions, fears, regrets, or inner conflicts become so intense that they physically manifest as impossible supernatural events. Although the characters often discuss it using scientific theories, there is no single confirmed explanation for how it works.

Each person’s syndrome is unique and reflects their emotional state:

• Mai Sakurajima – People gradually stop noticing or remembering her because she wants to disappear from the overwhelming attention of being a celebrity.
• Tomoe Koga – She becomes trapped in a repeating time loop because she fears rejection and wants to avoid hurting her friendships.
• Rio Futaba – She splits into two versions of herself, representing the conflict between how she sees herself and how she believes others see her.
• Nodoka Toyohama – She swaps bodies with Mai because of her jealousy and desire to become her successful older sister.
• Kaede Azusagawa – After severe bullying, her trauma manifests as mysterious wounds and memory loss, creating a new personality to protect her from emotional pain.
• Shoko Makinohara – Her fear of dying from heart disease creates overlapping futures and timelines, allowing different versions of herself to exist.

Mai Sakurajima – Dreams

Mai dreams of living a life where she can balance her acting career with her own happiness. After years of being treated as a celebrity first and a person second, she wants to make her own choices instead of living according to others’ expectations. She hopes to continue acting because she genuinely enjoys it, while also maintaining a normal life with her friends and the people she loves. Above all, Mai wishes to build a peaceful future with Sakuta Azusagawa, supporting each other through life’s challenges.

Mai Sakurajima – Struggles

Mai’s greatest struggle is the pressure of growing up as a famous actress. Constant public attention and conflicts with her mother left her emotionally exhausted, leading her to temporarily leave the entertainment industry. She then becomes affected by Adolescence Syndrome, causing people to gradually lose the ability to see or remember her. Throughout the series, Mai also faces the difficulty of balancing her celebrity career with a normal school life, protecting her relationship with Sakuta from public scrutiny, and overcoming moments of jealousy, fear, and uncertainty. Despite these hardships, she remains strong, mature, and determined to protect the people she cares about.

Shoko Makinohara – Relationships

Sakuta Azusagawa (Close Friend / First Love) Shoko deeply cares about Sakuta and was his first love. She supports him through many difficult moments and encourages him to become a kinder and stronger person. Although their relationship is emotionally significant, Shoko accepts that Sakuta truly loves Mai and sincerely wishes for his happiness.

Mai Sakurajima (Friend) Mai is initially jealous of Shoko because of her close connection to Sakuta. However, after learning about Shoko’s illness and circumstances, Mai comes to respect and care for her. The two eventually share a relationship built on compassion and mutual understanding.

Kaede Azusagawa (Friend) Shoko treats Kaede with warmth and kindness whenever they meet. Kaede enjoys spending time with her and feels comfortable around her gentle personality.

Shoko Makinohara – Background

Shoko Makinohara is a girl whose life becomes deeply connected to Sakuta through Adolescence Syndrome. As a middle school student, she suffers from a serious heart disease that leaves her uncertain whether she will survive long enough to receive a heart transplant. Faced with fear and uncertainty about her future, she develops Adolescence Syndrome, creating a mysterious connection between different possible futures.

An older version of Shoko eventually appears and plays an important role in Sakuta’s life, encouraging him during difficult times and helping him grow as a person. As the truth behind her condition is revealed, Sakuta and Mai become determined to save her without sacrificing anyone else’s future. Through their efforts, the timeline is ultimately changed, allowing Shoko to receive the treatment she needs while giving everyone the chance to move forward with their lives. Despite the changes in memory caused by the new timeline, Shoko remains one of the most important people to influence Sakuta’s life and outlook.

Shoko Makinohara – Personality

Shoko is gentle, kind, and exceptionally compassionate. She has a warm, calming presence that makes others feel comfortable around her. She is optimistic and faces even the most difficult situations with remarkable courage and grace, rarely allowing fear or sadness to overwhelm her.

Despite her gentle nature, Shoko possesses great emotional strength and wisdom. She often offers thoughtful advice and encourages others to move forward instead of dwelling on regret. She is incredibly selfless, frequently placing the happiness of others before her own, even when it requires personal sacrifice. Her kindness, maturity, and unwavering optimism make her one of the most emotionally influential characters in the series.

Shoko Makinohara – Appearance

Face: Shoko has an exceptionally gentle and elegant face with delicate features. Her face is softly oval-shaped with a small nose, smooth cheeks, and a warm, comforting smile that gives her a calm and mature presence. Even when she is young, she carries herself with remarkable grace.

Nodoka Toyohama – Relationships

Mai Sakurajima (Older Half-Sister) Nodoka greatly admired Mai while growing up but also became jealous of her success and popularity. Their complicated feelings caused an Adolescence Syndrome incident that swapped their bodies. After resolving their misunderstandings, they developed a loving sisterly relationship based on mutual respect and support.

Sakuta Azusagawa (Friend) Nodoka often argues and jokes with Sakuta, but the two gradually become good friends. Although she sometimes finds his teasing annoying, she trusts him and appreciates everything he does for Mai and her family.

Sweet Bullet (Idol Group Members) Nodoka shares a close relationship with the members of Sweet Bullet. They support one another as teammates and work hard together to improve as idols.

Nodoka Toyohama – Background

Nodoka Toyohama is Mai Sakurajima’s younger half-sister and a member of the popular idol group Sweet Bullet. Although she admired Mai from childhood and dreamed of becoming as successful as her, she constantly compared herself to Mai’s beauty, acting talent, and popularity. Their complicated family history also contributed to their strained relationship, as Mai’s father remarried Nodoka’s mother after divorcing Mai’s mother.

Over time, Nodoka’s growing jealousy and feelings of inferiority trigger Adolescence Syndrome, causing her and Mai to mysteriously swap bodies. Living each other’s lives forces both sisters to understand the pressures the other faces. After honestly confronting their feelings, Nodoka realizes that Mai has always cared about her, while Mai acknowledges Nodoka’s struggles. Their relationship becomes much stronger, allowing Nodoka to move beyond jealousy and pursue her own dream as an idol with renewed confidence.

Nodoka Toyohama – Personality

Nodoka is energetic, outgoing, and hardworking. As an idol, she is cheerful and confident in public, but beneath that confidence she struggles with feelings of insecurity and inferiority, especially when comparing herself to her older half-sister, Mai. She desperately wants to be recognized for her own talents instead of constantly living in Mai’s shadow.

She can be stubborn, emotional, and occasionally jealous, allowing her frustrations to cloud her judgment. However, she is not selfish at heart. After confronting her feelings, she becomes more honest about her insecurities and works hard to improve herself through dedication rather than comparison. Nodoka genuinely loves Mai despite their complicated relationship and gradually matures into a more confident and supportive sister.

Nodoka Toyohama – Appearance

Sakuta Azusagawa – Relationships

Mai Sakurajima (Girlfriend) Mai is the most important person in Sakuta’s life. He fell in love with her after helping her overcome Adolescence Syndrome, and the two become a devoted couple. Their relationship is built on complete trust, honesty, playful teasing, and unwavering support. Sakuta is willing to risk everything for Mai, while she loves him just as deeply.

Kaede Azusagawa (Younger Sister) Sakuta deeply loves and protects Kaede. After she was traumatized by bullying, he devoted himself to caring for her and helping her recover. Their sibling bond is incredibly strong, and Kaede trusts Sakuta more than anyone else.

Tomoe Koga (Close Friend) Tomoe initially asks Sakuta to pretend to be her boyfriend, and she eventually develops romantic feelings for him. Although Sakuta does not return those feelings, he continues to care about her as a close friend and helps her through her struggles.

Rio Futaba (Best Friend) Rio is one of Sakuta’s closest friends. They often exchange sarcastic jokes, but they trust each other completely. Rio frequently helps Sakuta understand Adolescence Syndrome and offers him valuable advice.

Shoko Makinohara (Important Friend) Shoko was Sakuta’s first crush and had a profound influence on his life. Although he later falls in love with Mai, he continues to care deeply about Shoko and wants to save her. Their relationship is one of gratitude, respect, and friendship.

Sakuta Azusagawa – Background

Sakuta Azusagawa is a second-year student at Minegahara High School and the main protagonist of Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. Before the story begins, his life changes dramatically when his younger sister, Kaede, becomes the victim of severe bullying. The emotional trauma causes Kaede to develop Adolescence Syndrome, leaving mysterious scars on Sakuta’s chest as he shares in her suffering. Because of these scars and the strange rumors surrounding them, many students begin avoiding him, giving him a reputation as a troublemaker.

Despite being isolated, Sakuta continues to care for Kaede, taking on many household responsibilities while supporting her recovery. His life changes again when he meets Mai Sakurajima, a famous actress whom no one else can see due to Adolescence Syndrome. Determined to help her, Sakuta becomes involved in solving the supernatural problems affecting several people around him. Throughout the series, he grows through these experiences while developing a deep and loving relationship with Mai.

Sakuta Azusagawa – Personality

Sakuta is calm, intelligent, and unusually mature for his age. He has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor and often makes shameless or inappropriate jokes, especially around Mai, though he rarely means any harm. Beneath his laid-back attitude is a deeply compassionate and selfless person who never ignores someone in need, even if helping them causes him trouble.

He is honest to a fault and dislikes pretending to be someone he is not. Because of rumors surrounding him, many classmates avoid him, but Sakuta accepts this without seeking popularity. He values genuine relationships over appearances and is fiercely loyal to the people he loves. He is courageous, emotionally resilient, and willing to risk his own safety to protect others, especially Mai and Kaede. Although he often appears carefree, he carries emotional burdens quietly and rarely complains.

Face: Sakuta has a youthful, handsome face with soft but defined features. His face is slightly oval with a straight nose, thin eyebrows, and a relaxed expression that often appears calm, tired, or mildly sarcastic. Despite his indifferent look, his face can become warm and gentle when interacting with the people he cares about.

Body: Sakuta has a lean, athletic build with broad enough shoulders to appear fit without being muscular. His physique is that of an ordinary but healthy high school student. Standing around 172 cm (5’8”), he is taller than most of the female characters, including Mai.

Skin Tone: He has fair skin with a smooth complexion. His appearance is simple and natural, without any distinctive markings except for the scars on his chest caused by Adolescence Syndrome, which are usually hidden beneath his clothing.

Hair: Sakuta has short, slightly messy dark brown hair. His bangs naturally fall over part of his forehead, giving him a casual, unstyled look. His hair is thick but kept at a practical length.

Eyes: He has deep blue eyes with a calm, observant gaze. His eyes often appear half-lidded, reflecting his laid-back personality, but become sharp and determined during serious moments.

Outfit: At school, Sakuta wears the Minegahara High School boys’ uniform consisting of a white dress shirt, a dark tie, gray trousers, and a light brown blazer. Outside school, he prefers simple casual clothing such as hoodies, jackets, jeans, and sneakers.

Relationships

Sakuta Azusagawa Sakuta is Tomoe’s closest friend and the person who helped her overcome her Adolescence Syndrome. They pretended to date to help Tomoe deal with Yosuke Maezawa’s advances, and during that time she developed genuine romantic feelings for him. After realizing Sakuta truly loved Mai Sakurajima, Tomoe accepted his feelings and chose to remain one of his closest and most loyal friends.

Rena Kashiba Rena is one of Tomoe’s closest school friends. Tomoe initially feared losing Rena’s friendship because Rena had a crush on Yosuke Maezawa, leading to Tomoe’s Adolescence Syndrome. Although their friendship becomes strained for a time, they are eventually able to reconcile.

Nana Yoneyama Nana is Tomoe’s classmate and later her friend. They become close after Tomoe and Sakuta help Nana find her missing phone strap, and the two maintain a friendly relationship afterward.

Tomoe Koga – Character Growth

At the beginning of the series, Tomoe is heavily influenced by what other people think of her. She constantly worries about fitting in with her classmates and fears being rejected or left out. Because of this, she hides her true feelings and avoids making decisions that could damage her social standing. This fear is so overwhelming that it triggers her Adolescence Syndrome, causing time to repeat until she faces her emotions.

Through her experiences with Sakuta, Tomoe gradually learns that living only to satisfy others will never make her truly happy. Sakuta encourages her to be honest with herself instead of pretending to be someone she isn’t. As they spend time together, she gains the confidence to express her own feelings, even when it is painful.

Tomoe’s greatest moment of growth comes when she admits that she loves Sakuta, despite knowing he does not feel the same way. Rather than continuing to escape reality through the time loop, she accepts the truth and chooses to move forward. She also finds the courage to reject Yosuke Maezawa on her own instead of avoiding the situation.

By the end of her story, Tomoe has become far more confident, emotionally mature, and independent. She no longer lets the fear of rejection control her decisions and learns that genuine relationships are more valuable than popularity. Although she does not end up with Sakuta, she accepts his decision with grace, remains one of his closest friends, and continues living honestly as a stronger and more self-assured person.

Tomoe Koga is a first-year student at Minegahara High School who is cheerful, friendly, and outgoing, but secretly struggles with fitting in and being accepted by others. She cares deeply about her friends and fears being isolated, often hiding her true feelings to avoid disrupting her social circle. She first meets Sakuta Azusagawa after mistakenly believing he was bothering a young girl at a playground. Although the misunderstanding is quickly cleared up, the awkward encounter becomes the start of their friendship.

Soon afterward, Tomoe develops Adolescence Syndrome, which traps her in a repeating time loop. The phenomenon is caused by her anxiety over rejecting a confession from Yosuke Maezawa and her fear that doing so would damage her reputation and friendships. To help her avoid unwanted rumors, Tomoe asks Sakuta to pretend to be her boyfriend. As they spend time together on fake dates, at school, and while working at the same family restaurant, the two become genuinely close.

During these repeated days, Tomoe begins to understand herself better and slowly falls in love with Sakuta. However, she realizes that Sakuta’s heart already belongs to Mai Sakurajima. Despite wishing things could be different, she eventually accepts that his feelings will never change. After experiencing the same days countless times, Tomoe tearfully confesses her love to Sakuta and finally lets go of the future she had hoped for.

By honestly confronting her emotions, the time loop comes to an end. Tomoe finds the courage to reject Maezawa herself and stops allowing other people’s opinions to control her life. Although her feelings for Sakuta are not returned, she accepts them with maturity. The experience helps her become more confident, honest, and emotionally stronger, and she remains one of Sakuta’s closest and most dependable friends throughout the rest of the series.

Tomoe has a strong desire to fit in and avoid being shunned, which is why she bears unease over her past and why she cares about her social life and status; the latter is why she is usually seen on her phone and why she was unable to respond to Yosuke Maezawa's advances. After her experience with Sakuta, she was able to learn not to focus so much on what others think of her and thanked him for helping her grow as a person. She seems to have a somewhat odd sense of ethics, as immediately after she realized her mistake for kicking Sakuta, she ordered him to kick her in return so that they would be even. Nevertheless, she is all in all a very positive, kind and cheerful girl, with a pleasant personality. However, her young age shows: she can be overly people-oriented, dependent and somewhat self-entitled, as seen when she creates the time loop as she fell in love with Sakuta. In the end, though, she agrees to be just friends with him. Tomoe's Fukuoka accent sometimes slips out when she's excited or embarrassed.

Adolescence Syndrome

Main article: Adolescence Syndrome Stemming from her desire to fit in, Tomoe was capable of evoking a simulated future in which she could rewind and restart the current day. After professing her love to Sakuta, while also acknowledging she could only be friends with him, time was reset to before the simulated future was elicited.

Tomoe's experience with Adolescence Syndrome also enabled her to see Sakuta across different time-planes, as demonstrated in the seventh novel. This was key for Sakuta to prevent a future in which he or Mai died from a traffic accident.

Face: Tomoe has a youthful, softly rounded face with a calm and pleasant expression. Her eyes are large and expressive, giving her a bright, attentive look. Her eyebrows are gently curved, complementing her eyes and adding to her approachable appearance. She has a small, neat nose and a subtle, confident smile. Her hair is short and light brown, styled in soft waves that frame her face naturally, creating a tidy yet relaxed look. Body: Tomoe has a slender, well-proportioned build with a light and graceful frame. Her posture is relaxed but confident, with her shoulders slightly back and her stance balanced. Her limbs are slim, and her legs are long and straight, contributing to an overall elegant silhouette. The way she stands gives off a composed, self-assured presence without appearing rigid. Tomoe is a short girl who has fluffy beige-blonde hair styled into a bob-cut along with blue eyes. The left side of her hair is adorned with a T-shaped hair barrette. Sakuta has remarked on multiple occasions that she has a large butt, which bothers her. Since Volume 10 (and Season 2 of the anime), when Sakuta is in college and Tomoe is a senior at high school, Tomoe's hair has grown out slightly. She is a 18 years woman with fair skin and her height is 152cm her Birthday is on May 23

Sakuta Azusagawa Sakuta is Kaede’s older brother and the person she trusts most. After losing her memories because of Adolescence Syndrome, he cared for her every day and supported her through her fears. Kaede deeply loves and depends on him, and the two share a very close sibling bond. She works hard to complete a list of personal goals with Sakuta before her memories return, hoping to leave him with happy memories.

Mai Sakurajima Mai is one of Kaede’s closest friends and acts like a caring older sister. At first Kaede is shy around her, but Mai’s kindness helps her open up. Mai supports Kaede’s recovery, cooks for her, helps her study, and encourages her as she prepares to return to school.

Rio Futaba Kaede is initially nervous around Rio but soon grows comfortable with her. Rio helps Kaede with studying, cooks for her, and treats her kindly. Their friendship becomes close enough that Kaede begins calling her by her first name.

Nodoka Toyohama Kaede first meets Nodoka during the body-swap incident with Mai, though she never realizes it happened. Later, she watches Nodoka perform with her idol group, Sweet Bullet, and becomes a fan of her music.

Kotomi Kano Kotomi is Kaede’s childhood friend from before her memory loss. Although the new Kaede does not remember her, Kaede’s original memories never forgot their friendship. After Kaede regains her memories, the two are finally reunited.

Tomoe Koga Tomoe first knows Kaede as Sakuta’s younger sister. Later, they become coworkers at the same family restaurant. They develop a friendly relationship, with Tomoe treating Kaede warmly and supporting her as she adjusts to working.

The original Kaede returns When attempting to complete her goals to become more social again, large bruises appeared on her neck. After managing to complete them, she regained her old memories, but lost her memory of everything that had happened after her first experience with Adolescence Syndrome. In the eighth light novel, her bruises flare up again, largely due to conflicting thoughts after being made aware of her other personality that lived at home in place of her. And after the effort he made during his entrance exam to Minegahara High School.

These bruises disappear, and her syndrome is resolved, after Sakuta admits that he likes both versions of Kaede, and the current Kaede decides to follow her own decisions regardless of what others say.

Sometime during Kaede's time in middle school, she was a victim of online bullying and death threats. As a result of Adolescence Syndrome, this caused her to suffer various physical injuries and she was only able to recover after she stopped using social media and going to school. Unfortunately, she had also developed amnesia as a way to separate herself from her experience with being harassed, which drove her mother (also forcing her father) to abandon her with Sakuta Azusagawa. After her brother received advice from Shoko Makinohara, she was gifted a pen and notebook and she was suggested to write her first name in hiragana (かえで) instead of kanji (花楓). Kaede was declared the current "Kaede" and her former self was dubbed "Kaede-san", which earned her tearful approval.

Adolescence Syndrome

Main article: Adolescence Syndrome Kaede was inflicted with multiple cuts and bruises after being harassed online by her classmates, which forced Sakuta to isolate Kaede from the internet as a whole. She had also lost her memories of everything up until the time when she was first hospitalized, as a subconscious way to sever herself from her experience with bullying.

Pre-amnesia

Kaede originally had a kind, yet cheeky personality which granted her little difficulty with social interaction. She regains this personality after completing her list of goals.

Post-amnesia

As a result of being bullied online, Kaede lost her memories, gained a new personality and became a shut-in. Kaede's new personality considers her pre-amnesia self as an entirely different person that everyone was talking about, causing her to become fearful of strangers. She ironically shows a more outward, cheerful personality at home in front of her older brother, the first person to recognize Kaede's new personality as such.

Kaede develops a liking for pandas after watching them on a DVD that Sakuta bought for her, and as a result, wears a panda onesie at home. Kaede also tends to refer to herself in third person, although she distinguishes between herself and the "other" Kaede, who she calls "Kaede-san".

Kaede presents her list of goals After seeing several girls visit her and her brother's home, Kaede becomes inspired to start leaving home herself, writing out a list of goals to accomplish with Sakuta. As stated in her diary entries, she also does this having long accepted that she is a placeholder for Kaede-san and will be superseded when Kaede-san gets her memories back.

Face: Kaede has a soft, youthful face with a gentle, friendly expression. Her eyes are large and rounded, giving her an attentive, warm look. She has straight eyebrows, a small nose, and a subtle smile that makes her appear approachable. Her hair is light brown, medium length, with soft waves and bangs framing her face, adding to the cute, relaxed appearance. Body: Kaede has a slim, petite build with balanced proportions. Her posture is upright and relaxed, and her pose-one arm slightly raised-adds a casual, conversational feel. Her legs are long and slender, contributing to an overall light and graceful silhouette. The overall body shape is delicate rather than athletic, fitting a gentle, everyday look. Kaede has medium length, light brown hair tied to a loose ponytail at the front, and a strand of hair on both sides adorned with a tiny pink bow each. She also has square bangs and possesses large, pale brown eyes. She is normally shown wearing a panda onesie with a pink shirt underneath. This is primarily due to her insecurity and paranoia as a result of her Adolescence Syndrome. She stops wearing the onesie after regaining her memories.She is 16 years old Girl with fair skin and her height is 162cm her Birthday is on November 25

Shoko Makinohara As Sakuta's first crush, Mai expresses some jealousy towards her and is uncomfortable with the two of them spending time alone. Part of this comes from Shoko openly admitting her affection for him. When Shoko arrives at Sakuta's apartment for a prolonged stay, Mai momentarily loses her composure while cooking. She then nearly greeted her with a kitchen knife in hand. With this though, Mai understands that Shoko was there for Sakuta when she was not, as she was busy with work. Upon learning of her circumstances, Mai becomes much more compassionate towards her and becomes much less hostile towards Shoko's feelings for Sakuta. She also tries to save her from her illness by sacrificing herself; however, the situation is resolved when Sakuta gets back in time to save Mai, and they decide together to change timeline where they risk sacrificing their memories of each other. Nodoka Toyohama Mai wakes up in Nodoka's body Nodoka is Mai's younger stepsister, who has looked up to Mai ever since watching her first role on TV. It is also revealed that Mai's parents had separated after giving birth to her, only for Mai's father to end up with Nodoka's mother, causing the two mothers to feud with each other through their daughters. Nodoka's jealousy towards Mai, who won the better roles when they were younger, eventually caused them to swap bodies. Mai keeps calm in spite of the event, contrasting with Nodoka's panic, and they agree to live in this predicament for a while. Nodoka's jealousy gets the better of her, and a day later, she launches a verbal tirade on Mai, making her refuse to see Nodoka again. Despite Mai's lack of singing and dancing experience, her professionalism ultimately prevails in the month that she has to rehearse for a live concert with Nodoka's idol group, while Nodoka struggles with a routine filming session while in Mai's body. Nodoka and Mai regain their original appearances. Hours after the concert and an attempted suicide by Nodoka, Mai and Nodoka are able to reconcile at the former's home and revert to their usual bodies, after it was made clear to Nodoka that Mai did indeed love her, since she appreciated receiving the letters of support from Nodoka that kept her going in her early acting career. Kaede Azusagawa Having heard about her past from Sakuta, Mai acts very gentle towards her. Kaede eventually opens up to her after Mai gives her some new clothes. She is very considerate towards Kaede, which can be seen when her phone rings. She leaves to a different room to answer the call. After Kaede gets her memories back, Mai later arranges for her to get a haircut before going back to school.

Mai thanks Sakuta for everything before he falls asleep On the day Mai reappears after Sakuta confesses to her in front of the entire school, Mai doesn't take it well. She slaps him in the face, stamps him on the foot and dares Sakuta to prove his love for a whole month. She also refuses to answer Sakuta's confession while the rest of the school is watching, but does denounce the hospitalization rumors regarding Sakuta. Ultimately, Mai does not reject Sakuta, since she chooses to go with him when the teachers call him over. From then on, Mai and Sakuta would meet every day for lunch. Mai kisses Sakuta on the cheek In the following month, Mai's relationship with Sakuta is threatened when she sees Tomoe Koga on top of Sakuta in the room they were supposed to be in for lunch. Though Mai tries to be understanding, even letting Sakuta go on the fake date with Tomoe, she would end up witnessing the scuffle in Shichirigahama station between Sakuta and Yosuke Maezawa that ended with Sakuta grabbing Tomoe by the hand and fleeing the station. Fortunately, Sakuta is able to get Tomoe to reset time so that none of the events above happened. Instead, on the reset June 27, Mai affirms her relationship with Sakuta by kissing him on the cheek. During summer break, Mai is told by her agency that she is not allowed to date; she relays the news to Sakuta, though she reassures him that they can still meet up in school. Though they meet several times afterwards, they are yet to kiss each other properly.

Sakuta Azusagawa Mai hugs Sakuta's arm Sakuta was the only person to see Mai in a bunny costume at the library. Though Mai warned against seeing her again, Sakuta became interested enough to talk to her again the next time he did see her, after school. It is from Sakuta that Mai hears of adolescence Syndrome and how she could be suffering from it. Mai vents her feelings over why she went on hiatus Although Mai isn't happy that Sakuta knew of her decision to quit acting, she takes action after finding out how Sakuta knew by calling the journalist in question that Sakuta found out from, and stopping her from publishing Sakuta's scars in exchange for an exclusive interview about her return to showbiz with another agency. From that point she would credit Sakuta for her decision to return, although she takes care not to publicly reveal his name. Mai signals Sakuta to leave the room Mai did not reveal her relationship status until a tabloid-related "scandal" forced her to do so publicly in front of cameras at a press conference. Before then, there were already signs that she had fallen for Sakuta. She displays "Type B tsundere" tendencies during her first night with Sakuta at a hotel, after they flee more than two hundred miles west to find people who still recognize her. Since then, she mostly tolerates Sakuta's lewd jokes and snarky remarks, sometimes teasing him back. Mai twice displays gratitude to how far Sakuta will go for her, first on their night at the hotel, then three nights afterwards, when Mai became fully aware that Sakuta was staying awake in order to not forget her.

Mai began acting at the age of six. After landing the lead role of a morning drama (a character known as "Maiko-chan"), Mai's profile increased from there, and she began appearing in more and more movies, television shows, and commercials. Mai enjoyed the limelight despite the stress it gave her, but it suddenly ended after her mother, who was also her agent, forced her to participate in a swimsuit photoshoot in 9th grade despite her objections. Mai thus took a hiatus and attended high school, though because of work commitments made before then, she only joined on the second term of her first year. By then, social circles had formed, making her the "odd one out," causing her to be isolated. As a result, the student body didn't know how to deal with her. While they had no reason to bully her, they also feared associating with her would cause themselves to be isolated as well. Unbeknownst to Mai, these events caused a severe emotional disturbance in her, and the effects of adolescence syndrome caused her existence to become unnoticed by other people. While she initially enjoyed a respite from the spotlight, Mai soon realized she was in peril of disappearing altogether.

Due to her successful career pre-hiatus, Mai was able to go on the property ladder while still at high school. She lives in an apartment across the road from Sakuta's. Upon deciding to resume her career, she leaves her mother's agency for the agency of Ryoko Hanawa.

In the end, Mai is definitely a kind, sweet and nice girl at heart, and, just like Sakuta, she has a quick wit yet is immensely good-hearted. She's unwaveringly loyal and virtuous, and shows the full extent of her kindness and selflessness as she sacrifices herself to save Sakuta from being hit by a car and become Shoko's heart donor. However, she's revived as Sakuta manages to get back in time to save her.

Despite her kindness, though, and although she has forgiven her, she's still shown to resent her mother, given that she pretty much used her as a tool for easy money.

Adolescence Syndrome

Main article: Adolescence Syndrome Mai's effect was that she turned invisible, along with the things she touched, and that others began to forget her. As a result of wanting to be unseen by the public, Mai's existence slowly began to fade away. Over time, even those who had talked to Mai before would suddenly forget about her. This effect was subdued once Sakuta Azusagawa, the last person to forget about her, publicly confessed his love for Mai in front of the school, effectively making her reappear, and forcing the students and staff to acknowledge her existence.

Mai is actually very polite, levelheaded, helpful, and altruistic. Examples of her kind and warm nature include when Mai denounced the hospitalization incident as false for Sakuta's sake and when she gave Kaede, Sakuta's younger sister, a dress both as a gift and to at least spark interest in returning to the outside world, showing that, underneath her reserved and composed exterior, she is very sweet and loving. Kaede herself is very fond of Mai, seeing her as a role model for her beauty and kindness, and wishes she could be just like her. Mai indeed is reliable, empathetic and emotionally mature, and is consistently shown helping others.

Though at first Mai could be somewhat harsh and strict towards Sakuta at times due to his lewd remarks and call him a pervert or an idiot, she is genuinely affectionate and kind to him as well, and she often says that she loves him more than he thinks - which is proven to be true. Then, as her relationship with Sakuta goes on, she becomes less strict and more cheerful and openly affectionate.

Mai is a very kind yet serious individual, which is especially evident around Sakuta.She isn't cold, but given the bitterness she harbored at first, she comes across as somewhat aloof in her demeanor in the first episodes, with a tendency to want to be on her own despite wearing a bunny costume at the library for attention, she wasn't willing to attract more attention than necessary for herself.When noticed and recognized, she would be listening to music using earphones.Largely justified by her fame-laden childhood, which stopped her from being in school long enough to make friends, her somewhat bitter attitude changes, also thanks to meeting Sakuta.Upon resuming her acting career, Mai gradually starts opening up to people, and at that moment, it turns out she has all the kindness, maturity, and professionalism expected from an actress of her status - indeed, also in public appearances, she's shown to be composed and polite yet very approachable and friendly.She is also a high achiever at school, helping Sakuta at studying, and good at cooking.Despite her reserved nature, she is a warm-hearted person and doesn't deny her feelings indeed, she has no problem telling Sakuta how much she loves him, even despite the teasing and seemingly nonchalant responses she gives him at times.Instead, when it comes to topics she's uncomfortable with, Mai tends to ignore and stuff unpleasant feelings down rather than deal with them, as seen when, before her invisibility was subdued by Sakuta, she harbored deep anxiety over the possibility that she could be forgotten entirely and over the topic of her hiatus, as she still harbored bitter feelings over the circumstances that caused them; these feelings have now subsided since she started acting at another agency.While, just like Sakuta, she has a somewhat sarcastic sense of humor, she really is innocent at heart and can become shy and flustered when Sakuta teases her.She is a genuine and kind-hearted person who would never harm anyone
