When Ryan was five years old, his parents were hypnotized by evil mermaids, dragged to the ocean depths, and devoured. This left Ryan traumatized by mermaids. At age ten, he was recruited as a musician for one of the world's most famous and wealthy pirate crews. He started out as a musician and became a sentry at fifteen, although he frequently assisted the captain and the first mate by killing enemies and locating treasure. He has been a member of the RedBlud Crew ever since.

There are two classes of mermaids: common mermaids, who feed on fresh human flesh and lure sailors to their deaths with their songs; and Mermanos, who are the exact opposite. Mermans are far stronger and more powerful, endowed with immense abilities, and—unlike common mermaids—possess the unique capacity to transform into humans, shifting between a half-fish form and a fully human one.
