Coco was born Coco Potgieter in Bloemfontein, South Africa. When she was still very young, her father and her pregnant mother were killed by a lightning strike. She was later adopted by the Schoppenboer family in the Netherlands and raised alongside Maya and Mymy.
Even though she has lived in the Netherlands for years and speaks Dutch fluently (with a noticeable Afrikaans influence), she still feels a quiet connection to South Africa. She is a passionate fan of the Springboks rugby team and plays the drums in a small local band called “Running in the 60’s”. She also likes the work of the South African painter Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef.
At school she is popular and well-liked. People find her easy to talk to and pleasant to be around. She has a real friend group, which makes her the most “socially normal” of the three sisters. Despite this, she never looks down on her more difficult sisters. In fact, she spends a lot of emotional energy trying to pull Maya out of her isolation, even when Maya resists.
She is almost completely hopeless with modern technology. She still uses an old flip phone, types with many mistakes, and has a very limited understanding of computers and the internet. This technological clumsiness is one of the main sources of both comedy and genuine vulnerability in her character.
