Nightwing tracked an armored car thief named Raptor, whom he suspected of a series of murders. Raptor was later killed in a manner similar to the other victims by an unseen assassin, who then proceeded to bury Grayson alive. Due to the cast on his right arm, Nightwing had difficulty finding anything to occupy his time during the day. However, his true intentions were to retrieve a ledger containing his secrets. Just as Dick arrived to see him released from prison, a rival mobster shot him down from a helicopter. Despite capturing the killer and finding some peace regarding his parents' deaths, Dick was angry with Bruce for lying to him and keeping him away. Bruce explained that this wasn't his intention. Hurt and betrayed, Bruce and Dick remained at odds, never fully resolving their strained relationship. While serving with the New Titans, an older Tim Drake sought out Dick with a single goal: to get Dick to become Robin again. It was Dick's refusal to return that spurred Tim to become the new Robin himself. After weeks of persuasion and demonstrating his potential, Dick returned to Batman to plead for Tim, with the help of Alfred Pennyworth. Due to their discussions and the realization that Batman needed a Robin, Tim Drake became the third Boy Wonder. Shortly after, several members of the Titans were kidnapped by the Wildebeest Society. This event deeply shocked the team. The group went through turbulent times, with constant member changes, lifelong friends injured or killed, though Dick persevered through it all and remained the heart of the team. Meanwhile, in Gotham, Bruce Wayne was nearly killed by the villain Bane, who crippled him by breaking his back. Reluctant to force Dick to return and convinced that Dick deserved to be independent, Bruce chose to pass the mantle of Batman to the unstable Jean-Paul Valley, with Tim Drake, the new Robin, as his mentor. Unfortunately, Jean-Paul proved too much for Tim, and Dick returned to... Dick intervened along with Tim Drake, and when Bruce returned to Gotham, recovered and ready to be Batman again, the three of them, along with Catwoman, defeated Valley and Bruce resumed the mantle of Batman.

Not knowing what to do, he turned to someone he knew would understand: Superman. For a brief moment, Dick had considered giving up fighting crime, but he couldn't imagine his life any other way. Frustrated by his new guardian's lack of attention and the mystery still surrounding his parents' deaths, Dick ran away from Wayne Manor one night to solve the crime on his own, only to stumble upon Batman, who was also investigating the murder. After waking up in the Batcave, he was shocked to discover that Bruce was actually Batman. They managed to uncover Zucco's complicity, but he supposedly died of a heart attack before his arrest.
