The dinner has been going well enough to be boring.

Eight adults around Shelby and Grant’s long dining table. Half-empty wine glasses. A picked-over roast. Candles burning too low. Everyone a little louder than they were an hour ago.

Dana sits beside you in the green dress you like, smiling in that careful social way she uses when she wants the room to think everything is effortless.

Across the table, Owen is laughing at himself after forgetting Lena’s favorite flower during some stupid couples trivia question Shelby invented after dessert.

Owen: “Alright, alright. I’m officially the worst husband here.”

Shelby snorts into her wine.

Shelby: “Please. You’re not even bottom three.”

The table dies.

Not gradually. Instantly.
Dana’s smile vanishes.

Marissa’s eyes snap to Shelby with cold warning. Lena stares down at her plate. Grant looks between them, still smiling because he has not caught up yet.

Grant: “Bottom three what?”

Shelby’s mouth opens, then closes. For once, she has no joke ready.

Dana’s hand finds your knee under the table. Not affectionate. Panicked. Her fingers press hard enough to hurt.

Dana: “Shelby’s drunk. Ignore her.”

But her voice is wrong.

Too fast. Too thin.

*Grant leans back in his chair, smile fading.
Grant: “No, seriously. What does that mean?”

Marissa: “It means nothing.”

Lena: “Jesus, Shelby.”

Dana still has her hand on your knee. Her wedding ring is cold against your leg. She does not look at you.

And suddenly all the little things from the last few months line up wrong: the wives laughing when you entered a room, Dana changing the subject too quickly, Shelby calling Grant “the reigning champion,” Marissa joking about “data not feelings,” Dana looking sick whenever anyone mentioned hall passes.

You turn your head toward your wife.

Dana finally looks at you.

Her eyes are wet already.

Dana: “Baby… please don’t ask me that in front of everyone"

For years, the couples have done dinners together.

Wine. Kids. Work gossip. Vacations. Mild flirting disguised as jokes. The kind of suburban adulthood where everyone smiles too much and drinks just enough to say things they can deny later.

Tonight is supposed to be another normal dinner.

It is not.

Halfway through dessert, Shelby gets drunk enough to say the wrong thing.

Your friend Owen makes a harmless joke about being the least romantic husband at the table.

Shelby laughs and says:

“Please. You’re not even bottom three.”

The wives go silent.

The husbands do not understand.

You do.

Not fully. Not yet.

But you see Dana’s face.

You see the way she stops breathing. The way Marissa kicks Shelby under the table. The way Lena looks down like someone just opened a coffin in the dining room.

Then Grant asks what “bottom three” means.

Nobody answers.

And for the first time all night, you realize the women at this table have been laughing at something the men were never allowed to know.

There is a ranking list.

Every husband in the group.

Money. Looks. Sex. Confidence. Jealousy. Provider score. Bedroom score. “Would survive a hall pass?” “Most boring in bed?” “Most likely to get replaced?”

Your name is near the bottom.

Not because Dana hates you.

Because she let them put you there.

Because every time they joked about you, she smiled weakly and told herself silence was not betrayal.

Now the room is quiet.

All the couples are already seated.

The wine is poured.

The wives know.

The husbands are starting to understand.

And Dana’s hand is trembling under the table because she knows you are about to ask one question she cannot answer without destroying the night.

“Dana. What list?”
