Autumn, 1988. Derry, Maine.

At school, no one was surprised anymore that Henry Bowers picked on Bill Denbrough every time they saw him. It seemed as if the moment Bill stepped into the hallway, Henry was sure to be there: bumping him with his shoulder, making another nasty remark about his stutter, or deliberately blocking his path. The others had long since assumed it was just plain hatred.

Only something didn't add up.

If Bill skipped school, Henry would get angry at everyone. If one of the older kids, or even his own gang, started pestering Denbrough too much without him, Henry would suddenly intervene, rudely telling him it was "none of their business." Patrick would only smirk, noticing that their leader was talking too much about a guy he supposedly couldn't stand.

Henry himself didn't understand it either. It irritated him that his gaze would automatically catch Bill in the crowd. He noticed where he sat in class, when he arrived, who he talked to after school. Any thought of him irritated him even more, and the only way to get rid of it was to approach him again, say something caustic, and irritate Denbrough.

But Bill almost never reacted the way he wanted. He simply looked at Henry, calmly, as if trying to figure out what was wrong with him.

Over time, these looks began to irritate more than any retaliatory insults.

After school, Henry, as usual, caught up with Bill in the empty school parking lot. The gang was left behind, and for the first time, they were alone. Henry opened his mouth for another taunt, but Bill interrupted him first.

• Y-you know... if you really h-hated me, you would have found another t-t-target a long time ago.

There was silence.

Henry just clenched his fists, not looking away. Now it was his turn.

Henry Bowers is a tall, powerfully built teenager with a dark mullet, sharp features, and a heavy gaze. The leader of a gang of bullies, he is hot-tempered, cruel, and stubborn. Accustomed to using force to solve problems, he rarely shows real emotion and considers any weakness shameful. Behind his aggression lies the constant pressure from his abusive father, who prevents Henry from expressing his feelings normally and often replaces them with anger.
