Ikuyo Kita

Kita seems cheerful and confident, but she struggles with living up to people’s expectations. At first, she joined a band even though she could not properly play guitar because she wanted to fit in and impress others. When she realized she was not good enough, she became embarrassed and ran away.

After joining Kessoku Band, she works hard to improve her guitar skills. Although she is naturally outgoing, she sometimes worries about disappointing her friends or not contributing enough. Her journey is about building genuine confidence through effort rather than relying on appearances or popularity.

Ikuyo Kita

Kita dreams of becoming a confident musician who can inspire and connect with people through her performances. After realizing that talent requires hard work, she dedicates herself to improving her guitar skills and becoming a worthy member of Kessoku Band.

She wants to perform on larger stages, grow as both a guitarist and vocalist, and continue making memories with her friends. She also hopes to become someone who can encourage others with her music and positive attitude.

Ryo Yamada

Ryo struggles with expressing her emotions and connecting with people. She prefers following her own artistic vision instead of fitting in with others, which can make her seem distant or difficult to understand.

She also has a habit of ignoring practical responsibilities. Her passion for music leads her to spend most of her money on expensive instruments and equipment, often leaving herself broke. While she appears calm and independent, she sometimes has difficulty showing appreciation or asking for help, even though she genuinely values her friends.

Ryo dreams of creating music that is original and meaningful. She is not interested in becoming famous simply for popularity or money. Instead, she wants to express herself through music and stay true to her own artistic style.

Nijika Ijichi

Nijika’s struggle is less obvious than the others’. She carries the responsibility of keeping Kessoku Band together while chasing her dream of becoming a successful musician. As one of the band’s founders, she often puts the needs of her friends before her own.

She worries about whether she is a good enough leader and whether the band can continue improving. Because she wants everyone to enjoy music together, she sometimes hides her own concerns and pressures herself to stay positive for everyone else.

Nijika dreams of building a successful band and creating a place where people can connect through music. Inspired by the live house STARRY and her older sister Seika, she wants Kessoku Band to become a group that people enjoy listening to.

More than fame, Nijika wants the band members to stay together, grow as musicians, and create unforgettable memories. Her dream is to see Kessoku Band perform on bigger stages while remaining close friends.

Hitori Gotoh (Bocchi)

Bocchi’s biggest struggle is her extreme social anxiety. She wants friends and wants to perform in front of people, but she becomes overwhelmed in social situations. She constantly overthinks conversations, fears embarrassing herself, and assumes others will reject or judge her. Because of this, she spent most of her childhood alone despite desperately wanting companionship.

Even though she is an outstanding guitarist, Bocchi has little confidence in herself. She believes her skills are never good enough and often freezes during performances because of stage fright. Her journey is about overcoming fear, trusting others, and learning that she deserves friendship and acceptance.

Hitori’s greatest dream is to overcome her social anxiety and find a place where she truly belongs. Since she was a child, she wanted friends who would accept her and share her love of music. She hoped becoming a guitarist would help people notice her and give her the confidence to connect with others.

As her journey continues, her dream grows beyond simply making friends. She wants to become a skilled musician who can perform confidently on stage without letting fear control her. She also hopes Kessoku Band can succeed so she can continue making music with the friends she treasures.

Members

• Hitori Gotoh (Bocchi) – Lead Guitarist. An exceptionally talented guitarist whose technical skill is the backbone of many of the band’s performances.
• Nijika Ijichi – Drummer and founder. She keeps the rhythm of the band and acts as its emotional leader, encouraging and supporting the other members.

Kessoku Band is the central band in Bocchi the Rock! and the group around which the entire story revolves. Kessoku Band mainly performs at the live house STARRY, which is managed by Nijika’s older sister, Seika Ijichi. STARRY becomes the band’s home stage, where they rehearse, perform live concerts, and gain experience in front of audiences. Through these performances, the members improve both as musicians and as friends.

The band performs Japanese rock music, featuring energetic guitar riffs, emotional vocals, and lyrics about youth, loneliness, hope, and chasing dreams. Their music reflects each member’s personality, especially Bocchi’s feelings of isolation and her gradual growth in confidence.

By the end of the anime’s first season, Kessoku Band has grown significantly as both musicians and friends. Everything changes when she unexpectedly meets Nijika Ijichi, an energetic drummer who is desperately searching for a guitarist after her band’s previous guitarist suddenly quit before an important performance. Seeing Hitori carrying a guitar, Nijika asks if she can help. Although terrified, Hitori agrees and follows Nijika to the live music venue STARRY, where she meets bassist Ryo Yamada. There, Hitori performs with them for the first time. While her nervousness prevents her from showing her full ability immediately, Nijika and Ryo quickly recognize her incredible talent and invite her to officially join their band, Kessoku Band.

Joining Kessoku Band marks the beginning of Hitori’s gradual transformation. Although she still panics during conversations and performances, she is no longer facing her fears alone. Nijika constantly encourages her and reminds her that everyone grows at their own pace. Ryo, despite her quiet and eccentric personality, respects Hitori’s musical talent and often offers advice from the perspective of an experienced musician.

The band later reunites with Ikuyo Kita, a cheerful and popular classmate who had originally wanted to join because she admired Ryo. However, she had secretly lied about being able to play guitar and ran away when she realized she couldn’t keep up. After meeting Hitori and witnessing how hard she had worked to master the instrument, Kita feels inspired instead of discouraged. She returns, apologizes for her mistake, and begins practicing seriously. Through determination and support from the others, she earns her place as Kessoku Band’s guitarist and lead vocalist.

Bocchi the Rock! tells the story of Hitori Gotoh, a high school girl who dreams of becoming a successful guitarist despite suffering from severe social anxiety. Ever since she was a child, Hitori found it incredibly difficult to talk to other people or make friends. While her classmates naturally formed friendships and joined clubs, Hitori spent most of her time alone, imagining a future where someone would finally notice and accept her. Although Hitori’s guitar skills improved dramatically, nothing changed about her social life. She still struggled to speak to classmates and had no friends to perform with. Instead, she uploaded videos of herself playing guitar online under the anonymous name “Guitar Hero.” Her performances attracted thousands of viewers, and she became popular on the internet without anyone knowing her real identity. Ironically, while she was admired online, she remained almost completely unnoticed at school.

When Hitori entered high school, she hoped it would finally be the beginning of a new life. She imagined joining a band, making friends, and becoming more confident. However, her anxiety once again prevented her from approaching anyone, and weeks passed without her making a single meaningful connection. She carried her guitar with her every day, secretly wishing someone would ask her to join a band, but nobody did.

Hitori Gotoh, better known as Bocchi, grew up as a very quiet and isolated child. Since she was young, she wanted to have friends and experience the kind of happy social life she saw other people enjoying, but her intense shyness and fear of rejection made it extremely difficult for her to approach others. She often felt like she was invisible and struggled with the feeling that she did not belong anywhere.

Her life began to change when she discovered rock music. After seeing a television interview with a guitarist who explained that being in a band allowed them to become noticed, Hitori became fascinated by the guitar. She believed that learning the instrument could help her become someone special and maybe allow her to connect with other people.

She began practicing guitar alone after school and dedicated years of her life to improving. Because she spent so much time practicing, she became an incredibly skilled guitarist despite having little experience performing with others. Online, she gained recognition as “Guitar Hero,” a talented anonymous guitarist known for her impressive playing.

However, her success online did not solve her biggest problem: her lack of confidence around people. Even though she was talented, she still struggled to speak normally, perform in front of an audience, or join a group. When she entered high school, she hoped that becoming part of a band would finally help her make friends, but her anxiety prevented her from taking the first step.

Everything changed when she met Nijika Ijichi, who invited her to temporarily join Kessoku Band as their guitarist. Through Nijika, Ryo, and Kita, Bocchi slowly begins to experience friendship for the first time. She learns that people appreciate her not only because she can play guitar but because she is a kind and genuine person.

She wants to make friends and be noticed, but her fear of embarrassment often prevents her from taking action. Even simple conversations can become overwhelming for her because she constantly worries about saying or doing the wrong thing.

Bocchi is a huge overthinker. When she becomes nervous, her imagination often creates exaggerated scenarios where she believes she has failed or embarrassed herself. This makes her seem awkward and sometimes causes her to panic in funny ways. Despite this, her anxiety comes from her genuine desire to be accepted and appreciated.

Behind her timid personality, Bocchi is actually a very hardworking, passionate, and talented musician. She spent years practicing guitar alone because music became her way of expressing herself when she could not communicate easily with others. She has incredible dedication and a strong desire to improve, even if she rarely recognizes her own abilities.

Hitori Gotoh is a short, slim teenage girl with a small and delicate appearance that matches her shy personality.
