When Lee's group was surrounded by walkers in the streets of Macon, Carley suddenly appeared and rescued Duck from certain death by shooting one of the creatures that was about to attack him. She and Glenn helped the group reach the nearby pharmacy where they took refuge, and there Carley justified her actions to an angry Lilly, saying that they couldn't just let people die.

While the group was discussing Duck, Clementine and Lee were nearly attacked by a walker locked in the bathroom, but again, thanks to Carley's intervention, they were saved. Unfortunately, the shot fired by the woman ended up attracting all the walkers to the pharmacy, and then everyone had to remain silent until the creatures' attention was diverted elsewhere. Carley was a girl from a Lutheran family.[2] Before the zombie apocalypse broke out, she worked as a journalist for the WADE news network in Atlanta, and she was also a correspondent in some war zones.

When the outbreak began, she and her production team were in Macon covering the Cherry Blossom Festival. Her entire crew was attacked by walkers, and she was forced to watch as her producer was eaten alive. Fortunately, she was rescued by Doug, and the two took refuge in a nearby pharmacy with other survivors.

Lilly and her father, Larry, crossed paths with Lee's group after Carley and Glenn disobeyed him and went out to rescue those in need. Lilly argued vehemently with the newcomers, deeming them dangerous, and scolded Carley for his irresponsibility in leaving the pharmacy without considering the consequences. When Larry noticed that Duck appeared to have been bitten and wanted to kill him, Lilly tried to reason with him, saying he was just a child, but she couldn't stand up to her father's arrogance. The heated argument was interrupted when several walkers crowded at the door, drawn by the gunshot Carley fired to save Lee and Clementine, and everyone was forced to remain silent to avoid drawing attention.

After her father suffered a heart attack due to his fragile medical condition, Lilly begged Lee to get the pills he needed and told him about a medicine storage room they hadn't been able to open since arriving. Eventually, Lilly and Lee reconciled and began working together for the good of the group.

Clementine hid in her treehouse for several days until she saw Lee enter her home. She then spoke to him via walkie-talkie. When a zombified Sandra attacked Lee, Clementine rushed to his aid, giving him a hammer to defend himself and saving his life. Moved by Clementine's story and knowing her parents might be dead because of the desperate messages on the answering machine, Lee decided to take care of her, convincing her to leave the house and go to a safer place.

After meeting Shawn Greene, the boy mistook Clem for Lee's daughter, but Shawn cleared things up, and they were both invited to move to the Greene farm, which Shawn said was very safe. Upon arriving, Hershel questioned Clem to make sure she knew Lee, and Clementine confirmed that she did. At the farm, Clem and Lee met another family of survivors, and Clem quickly became friends with them. Their stay at the farm didn't last long, as Shawn was soon attacked by walkers, and Hershel expelled them, blaming them for his son's death. Clementine is an eight-year-old girl and the only child of Ed and Diana. She lived with them in a forest outside Atlanta and attended school, having already completed first grade.

When her parents left on a trip to Savannah, Georgia, Clementine was left in the care of a babysitter named Sandra, and it was during this time that the zombie apocalypse began. After Sandra was bitten by a walker while trying to protect her, Clementine hid in her treehouse, where she remained for hours to avoid being chased or bitten like her zombified babysitter.

Lee was originally from Macon, Georgia, where his family still resided and owned a family pharmacy that was managed by Lee's younger brother.

For six years, Lee worked as a history professor at the University of Georgia and was married to a woman who traveled frequently for work. One day, after returning home early from work, Lee discovered his wife in bed with a state senator (named Sam) and, blinded by rage, murdered the man. Lee was tried for murder and kept isolated from his family throughout the trial. Although he claimed he had accidentally killed the senator in self-defense, the authorities found him guilty and sentenced him to prison.

While being transported to the penitentiary to serve his sentence, Lee and the police officer escorting him struck up a conversation about their lives to ease the tension. A short while later, the police car Lee was riding in collided with a strange figure that crossed the road and plunged into a ravine beside the highway. After being unconscious for a long time, Lee awoke in the back of the vehicle and discovered that the officer driving had died under mysterious circumstances. Sensing something was wrong, Lee quickly got out of the car to investigate. After taking the key to the officer's handcuffs from his corpse, he was terrified when the man reanimated and tried to attack him. Lee barely managed to kill the creature by shooting it with a shotgun, but the sound of the gunshot attracted more walkers. Before the walkers appeared, Lee saw the silhouette of a little girl in the distance, but then the silhouette vanished. After the walkers appeared, Lee escaped through the forest until he finally managed to save himself by jumping over the fence of a nearby house's yard.

Kenny and his family sought refuge at the hospitable Hershel Greene's farm, where they met Lee and Clementine. Kenny shared his belief with Greene that the government would soon resolve their situation and outlined his backup plan in case that didn't happen. After Duck and Shawn were simultaneously attacked by walkers, resulting in Shawn's death, Kenny and his family, along with Lee and Clementine, were forced off the farm. Greene then offered to drive the girl's protector to Macon, Georgia. Before the chaos began, Kenny was a commercial fisherman in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he lived with his wife, Katjaa, and their son, Duck.

He and his family were returning from visiting Katjaa's sister in Memphis, Tennessee, when the whole apocalypse unfolded. While refueling at a gas station, a stranger tried to grab Duck, but Kenny lunged at him, thinking he was a kidnapper, and was terrified to realize what he really was. Kenny and his family decided to return home anyway, and along the way they drove past several people who needed help, until they finally reached Hershel Greene's farm.
