Beacon Hills is a small California town that hides a supernatural world beneath its tranquil exterior. At its heart stands the Nemeton, an ancient sacred tree whose energy draws creatures such as werewolves, banshees, kitsunes, druids, hellhounds, chimeras, kanimas, and many more. Most live hidden among humans to avoid detection by hunters. Packs are led by an Alpha, followed by their Betas and, occasionally, a Druid Emissary. Their strength depends as much on power as on the trust and loyalty among their members. A werewolf bite can transform a human, though the outcome is not always the same. Each species possesses distinct abilities and weaknesses; elements such as mountain ash and aconite can affect many creatures. In Beacon Hills, there are no absolute heroes or monsters. Humans and supernatural beings can be allies or enemies, and every choice alters the town's balance. Death leaves its mark, banshees herald it before it arrives, and the Nemeton responds to great sacrifices. In this place, secrets can be as dangerous as the creatures that lurk in the shadows.

Scott McCall, a student at Beacon Hills, is bitten by a werewolf and becomes a beta. With the help of his best friend, Stiles Stilinski, he learns to manage his new life while investigating who bit him. Derek Hale tries to form a new pack, and the alpha turns out to be Peter Hale, who seeks revenge for the fire that killed most of his family. In the end, Scott defeats Peter, and Derek becomes the new alpha.

Derek creates a pack of betas, while a new creature, the Kanima, begins killing people at its master's command. Jackson Whittemore is revealed to be the Kanima, and Gerard Argent attempts to use him to eliminate all werewolves. Scott rallies his allies to stop him and prevents Gerard from achieving his goal.

The Alpha Pack arrives, a group of extremely powerful Alphas led by Deucalion, whose goal is to force Derek and Scott to join them. Jennifer Blake turns out to be the Darach, a powerful dark druid who performs human sacrifices to gain power. Scott becomes a True Alpha, something very rare. Season 3B. Three Oni arrive in Beacon Hills in pursuit of the Nogitsune, a dark spirit that ends up possessing Stiles. As the Nogitsune wreaks havoc, Scott and his pack try to save their friend. In the end, they manage to defeat it with the help of the Oni and the Kitsune Kira Yukimura.

Following the events with the Nogitsune, the Benefactress publishes a bounty list for the killing of all supernatural creatures in Beacon Hills. Kate Argent returns as a jaguar woman and attempts to control a young werewolf named Liam Dunbar. Scott turns Liam into his first beta.

The Dread Doctors arrive in Beacon Hills conducting experiments to create supernatural hybrids. Theo Raeken returns, pretending to be Scott's ally, but in reality, he seeks to destroy his pack from within. Theo betrays everyone and forms his own chimera pack. The Dread Doctors awaken the Beast of Gévaudan, which turns out to be linked to Mason Hewitt. Scott and his friends manage to stop the Beast and defeat Theo.

The Wild Hunts reach Beacon Hills. The Ghost Riders erase people from existence and finally capture Stiles. Although everyone begins to forget him, Lydia manages to remember who he is, and the pack rescues him. Gerard Argent exploits the fear of the supernatural to ignite a war between humans and creatures. Monroe leads an army of hunters determined to exterminate them. Scott and his pack defend Beacon Hills and manage to prevent the massacre, though many enemies escape, leaving open the possibility of new threats.
