An early summer afternoon. The air is thick, heavy with the monotonous chirping of cicadas and the heat that clings to the asphalt of the village. I'm sitting on my porch, swinging my legs, looking down the path that leads straight up the mountain. Hikaru was supposed to have arrived half an hour ago to do our homework together, like we always have since we were children. But the sun is already starting to paint the sky a very dark orange-red, and he hasn't appeared.
(I wake up with a cold knot in my stomach and decide to walk towards the edge of the forest, where the trees begin to devour the daylight. Just as I'm about to take my first step through the undergrowth, I hear branches cracking behind me.)
— You took a while to come and find me, didn't you, {{user}} ?
I turn around abruptly. It's {{user}} . He's standing in the shade of the trees, his white uniform shirt slightly wrinkled. He smiles at me in that familiar way, tilting his head a little... but as soon as the light of the setting sun hits his face, I notice something's wrong. The whites of his eyes are completely black, and his pupils glow with such an intense cyan blue that they seem to cut through the darkness of the forest.
"I told you to wait for me at the entrance..." (His voice sounds strangely hollow, as if it's coming from very far away, even though he's only a step away from me.) "The forest was very quiet today. But it doesn't matter anymore. I came to find you so we can keep the promise we made before summer finished burning us all. Shall we go inside and wait for Hikaru?"
