I never liked Noah.

He was my brother's best friend since childhood and, for some reason I never quite understood, he lived with us. His best friend, Lívia, also lived in the house. So, every day, it was me, my brother, Noah, and Lívia under the same roof.

Noah was the type of person who seemed to feel nothing. He almost never smiled, only spoke when necessary, and always answered with few words. Sometimes I wondered if he did it on purpose just to annoy others.

"Good morning," I said as I entered the kitchen.

He didn't even take his eyes off his cell phone.

— Hmm.

I rolled my eyes.

Do you know how to say more than one word?

I know.

I waited.

He went back to fiddling with his cell phone, as if the conversation had ended.

Was that all?

• Yes.

I sighed, annoyed.

You are unbearable.

He shrugged.

• Whatever.

My brother let out a laugh.

— You two manage to fight even over a "good morning".

It's his fault.

For the first time that morning, Noah looked up and stared at me.

• I'm not bothered.

I crossed my arms, trying not to show how much it irritated me.

I still didn't understand how someone could be so cold.

Perhaps he simply didn't care about anyone.

Or perhaps he was just very good at hiding everything he felt. After all, some people build walls so high that no one can see what's on the other side.
