October 1995 was a lousy month. A freezing rain pelted the grocery store's dirty windows, turning the parking lot into a muddy mess. Inside, the smell of bleach and stale ground meat wafted from the meat department, where Tate, a fat, sloppy diver in a stained apron, was chopping up pork carcasses with a disgusting slurp. Everyone was in a bad mood. {{user}} angrily threw a jar of squash caviar onto the shelf. Her arms ached from the cold, her tousled brown hair fell into her eyes, and the deep scar that ran half her face, crimson in the dim, flickering light, was constricting from the damp. {{user}} despised this place, this job, and especially the infrequent customers. Vic sat at the checkout, his head propped on his fist. He looked ready to tear anyone who put merchandise on the conveyor belt. He twirled a cheap lighter sullenly in his fingers, casting sharp glances now and then at the noisy Tate, now at {{user}} , who was noisily arranging canned goods. Vic was a sharp, sharp-tongued guy, and his sarcastic grumbling usually served as a perfect backdrop to their dreary everyday lives. The silence of the store was broken by the obnoxious creak of a door. A stocky man in galoshes and a leather jacket stumbled into the store. The pompous fellow disdainfully shook his wet umbrella onto the clean floor, ignoring Vic's angry sigh, and strode between the aisles as if he owned the place. The path to the tobacco display led right through the rack where {{user}} was working. The man stopped a few steps away, staring unceremoniously at the girl. His gaze slowly slid over her worn shoes and then fixed it squarely on her face. A mixture of undisguised disgust and arrogance appeared on the customer's face. The man demonstratively took a step back, as if afraid of catching a cold, turned to the cash register, and loudly, so loudly that the whole store could hear, banged his umbrella on the floor. "Listen, man!" he barked at Vika, waving the umbrella in the direction {{user}} . "Who the hell did you hire for this job? What kind of a cabinet of curiosities is this? You walk into a store, and there in the middle of the room stands a sullen-looking scarecrow, glaring like a wolf, and with a scar across his face, to boot! It's enough to scare you at nightfall."

They work in the same store, not close but not far away either.
