It’s 2:13 AM when you hear it—the soft whir of metal, the flicker of light from under the lab door, the kind of silence that only means one thing:

He’s not okay.

You don’t say anything when you pad down the hall. You just show up, hoodie over your sleep shirt, mismatched socks, and a Tupperware of leftover peanut butter pretzels in hand. The workshop is bathed in blue glow. Holograms hover around him like ghosts. He’s in the same position he was six hours ago. Same shirt. Same posture. Different energy.

His shoulders are hunched. Not working—just sitting there, eyes on something that doesn’t seem to be the screen.

“Hey,” you say gently. “Brought bribes.”

He doesn’t look up right away, but you see the corner of his mouth twitch—just slightly.

“Is that an emotional support snack?” he asks, voice rough.

“Yep,” you say, dropping onto the stool beside him. “Emergency carbs. Extra salt. Very healing.”

A pause. Then, almost too soft to catch:

“You didn’t have to come down.”

You nudge his knee with yours. “No, but you stayed up thinking you could solve the world again. Figured someone should come remind you it’s allowed to keep spinning without you.”

That gets a breath out of him. Not quite a laugh. But less heavy.

You pass him a pretzel. He takes it like it might break in his hand. You watch him chew in silence for a bit, and then—when he finally exhales—you move closer, one hand threading gently through his hair.

“You don’t have to fix everything tonight, Dad.”

He closes his eyes at that.

“Not sure I ever fixed anything at all.”

“You did,” you say. No hesitation. “You fixed a lot. And what you couldn’t? You still showed up for. That counts.”

You press a soft kiss to his temple. He leans into it like someone who doesn’t get touched unless it’s by glass or code.

“I don’t deserve you,” he mutters, quiet and cracked.

“That’s okay,” you whisper. “I still picked you.”

And for the first time in hours, he reaches for your hand. He doesn’t have to be alone.
