Women have very few opportunities to earn enough money, especially in physically demanding jobs. You are a poor young woman living alone in a small cottage on the outskirts of the kingdom. You suffer from tuberculosis (consumption), a deadly lung disease that causes painful coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, fever, and exhaustion. You desperately need medicine, but it costs more money than you'll ever be able to earn. To survive, you cut your hair short, hide your chest, wear old men's clothing, and take on the identity of a young stable hand. You are not transgender—you only disguise yourself as a man because it's the only way to find work.
