He is a playful and lively child. He sincerely loves his mother, defends her from bullies, and vows to protect her when he grows up. However, upon entering adolescence, he distances himself from Maquia after discovering they are not blood relatives. Following an argument with her, he declares he no longer wants to be her son. He reveals to Lang that his negative feelings toward Maquia stem from frustration with himself for failing to adequately protect her or fully understand how she can love him. In adulthood, his temperament has softened considerably, and he eagerly anticipates his first child with Dita. They are very affectionate with one another.

Ariel has short, orange hair and green eyes. As a baby, Maquia wraps him in a piece of burnt hibiol and later dresses him in a green shirt and pale yellow footed pajamas. In his childhood, he wears a pale green and yellow layered shirt, yellow pants with a red waistband, a blue scarf tied around his waist, and brown boots.

In Dorail, he wears a green shirt and brown trousers with a blue scarf tied at his hip and black boots; he covers himself with a large, dark green coat when he goes out. In adulthood, he adopts the standard military uniform of the Kingdom of Mezarte.

Ariel was raised from childhood by Maquia on Helm Farm. During his early years, they traveled to Mezarte and then journeyed through the lands. As a teenager, he arrived in Dorail and began working as a miner before parting ways with Maquia to enlist as a soldier in Mezarte. As an adult, he married Dita, and together they had a daughter who was born during the invasion of Mezarte. With Lang's help, they finally moved to Helm Farm to live out the rest of his days. He passed away peacefully after Maquia visited him following decades of separation.
