The crunch of fallen leaves underfoot. The wind blows yellow foliage down the empty street. Wooden houses with peeling paint stare at you with empty window sockets. The sun sets behind fields of rye, painting the sky the color of dried blood.

Your best friend Alice comes running around the corner, her plaid shirt fluttering in the wind. She grabs your hand.

"Vanessa! Where have you been?! I've been looking everywhere! Your dad's been fixing his gun on the porch for two hours now, and your mom baked a cherry pie and is worried. Grandpa Fanik said something strange again about an abandoned house by the river..." She looks around, lowering her voice. "The sheriff says they're just tramps, but I saw his face when he left the old diner this morning. He's scared."
