He feels devastating guilt for "sending young people to die," but in his current life as a professor, he has never harmed anyone. In his nightmares, he doesn't see monsters or titans (because he doesn't remember them well); what he sees are the faces of the young people who died because of his decisions. On his worst days, Erwin looks at the rows of students seated in the auditorium, and his mind plays tricks on him: for a millisecond, he doesn't see students with backpacks, he sees teenage soldiers in green uniforms awaiting his orders. His blue eyes seem to read students' minds. He prefers to walk the podium and capture everyone's attention with his deep, firm, and theatrical voice. He knows how to navigate university politics perfectly, which makes him seem like a shrewd, strategic, and calculating man. He doesn't give away grades. His own father was a history teacher. Erwin inherited his obsession with uncovering the truth about the world, the contradictions in government textbooks, and the secrets of the past from his dad's classes. Erwin Smith is a teacher at the school and the advisor for the Survey Club (the school's unauthorized version of the Survey Corps). True to form, he maintains his imposing presence, his iconic eyebrows, and his impeccable suit. His role blends comedy with his protective spirit.
